Lakeland Flying Tigers News Release
Lakeland, FL (June 2nd, 2006) - Five Lakeland Tigers won't have to travel far when they suit up for the West Division All-Star squad at the 45th Florida State League Midsummer Classic at Joker Marchant Stadium on June 17th, 2006.
The Tigers named to the squad are starting pitcher Jair Jurrjens, relievers Kevin Whelan and Jeff Hahn, catcher Chris Robinson, and outfielder Jeff Frazier, who was selected as a designated hitter. Those five will be joined by the Lakeland Tigers coaching staff (by virtue of their West Division title in 2005) in their home dugout when the game is played on June 17th at Joker Marchant Stadium.
Jurrjens has been the most consistent member of the Lakeland rotation with a 4-0 record and 1.80 ERA in 60 innings pitched. Jurrjens has displayed outstanding command on the mound, generating 50 strikeouts against 7 walks on the year. He is holding opponents to a .195 batting average against and has a WHIP of 0.83. Jeff Hahn leads the Tigers with 5 wins (5-1) as a middle reliever and has been the staff workhorse, leading the club with 22 appearances. Hahn has a 2.75 ERA in 36 innings of work and is holding opposing hitters to a .227 average. Kevin Whelan, the Tigers' closer, has struggled with his command of late but for the most part has been rough on opposing hitters in the 9th inning. Whelan has saved 10 of 12 and has struck out 20 in 16.1 innings of work. Opposing hitters are batting only .196 against him.
Chris Robinson, the Tigers 3rd round pick in 2005 out of Illinois, made the team at catcher. Robinson carries a good defensive reputation and has hit .248/.310/.319 on the year with 9 doubles and 16 RBI. LF Jeff Frazier has hit in the heart of the Tigers order all season long and leads the club with 37 RBI. Frazier is hitting .268/.303/.404 on the year and has played a solid leftfield all year long. He was selected at the one DH slot that each division has on the roster.
