Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
DAYTONA, FL - The first 999 victories couldn't have been any crazier than the one on Friday night at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. The Fort Myers Miracle, known for their pitching during their 15 year history, used the bats to earn the 1000th victory in Fort Myers franchise history with an 11-6 pounding of the Daytona Cubs.
The Miracle, who improved to 32-22 and are all alone in first with the win, looked like they would cruise to the victory when they put up five runs in the first. A two run single by Brock Peterson and an RBI double from Matt Tolbert made it 3-0. Jeremy Pickrel's RBI groundout was followed by a sacrifice fly from Trevor Plouffe and the Miracle led 5-0 before the Cubs came to the plate.
Kyle Aselton, who had gone just 4.2 innings in his last two starts, lasted just one inning on Friday. He walked the first two hitters he faced, with one out gave up a two run double to Jake Fox and with two outs gave up an RBI single to Jeff Culpepper to make it 5-3.
The Cubs got to within a run in the bottom of the second when reliever Josh Hill gave up a lead off single to Joe Simokaitis. He moved to third on a two ground outs and scored on a wild pitch, but the Miracle bullpen tightened up from there.
The Miracle increased their lead in the third on a solo homer from Matt Tolbert, his fourth of the season, to make it 6-4. Plouffe got his second sac fly in the sixth to make it 7-4.
The Miracle put it out of reach with two runs in the seventh and eighth. With runners at second and third in the seventh Garrett Guzman's sac fly and Kyle Geiger's RBI single made it 9-4. In the eighth Guzman blasted a two run homer over the right field wall, his sixth of the season, to put the game away.
Every Miracle had either a hit, RBI or run scored and Tolbert was 3-5, falling a triple shy of the cycle, with two RBI and two runs scored. Guzman was 3-4 with a homer, three RBI and two runs scored and Peterson was 3-5 with two RBI and a run scored.
The Miracle bullpen was solid as Hill went 3.0 innings allowing just one run on three hits while striking out one and Danny Powers extended his scoreless innings streak to 14.1 by going 3.0 shutout innings allowing two hits.
The Miracle begin their quest for the next 1000 victories on Saturday night at Jackie Robinson Ballpark against the Cubs at 7:05 p.m. The Miracle send LHP Justin Jones (1-0, 0.68) against Cubs LHP Carlos Perez (0-2, 6.48).
