Five Goals in the Final Frame Push Islanders Way Past Mooseheads

December 16, 2021 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)
Charlottetown Islanders News Release

After being chased around the Eastlink Centre by the Acadie-Bathurst Titan, the Isles offense responded very well when they rolled into Saint John scoring early and eventually taking the game 5-3. Now, with the Islanders star blue-liner, Lukas Cormier and QMJHL rookie scoring leader Jakub Brabenec away at their respective World Junior camps, as well as missing Ben Boyd, Xavier Simoneau, and Micheal Horth the Isles would once again be placing larger workloads on other players. Rolling into the Scotiabank Centre tonight, Charlottetown had to fill the lineup by recalling forward Jonah Jelley after already recalling defenseman Anton Topilnyckyj last week. With his roster filled out all that Jim Hulton had left to do was form a game plan for the Mooseheads. The Isles were looking to stay in the lead of the season series when the puck dropped at 7 pm this evening, so far the Islanders have claimed two out of three meetings and were looking to get another win streak going tonight.

Speed was a major factor as soon as the puck dropped in this one, with the spotlight opened for anyone to take it tonight, a lot of players were hungry for the stardom they don't always get when their clubs have their normal rosters. We were nearly halfway through the opening frame when the ice was broken, and of course, it was the Islanders powerplay to do it. Patrick Guay seems to be the go-to guy now when the Isles get on the man advantage and it was no different tonight. Guay took a feed from Noah Laaouan and sent a bomb of a one-timer over and past the glove-side shoulder of Brady James. This was Guay's league-leading 24th of the campaign coming at 8:39 into the first on the powerplay. Assisting on the tally were Laaouan and Brett Budgell.

Shots through one favored the Islanders 12-10.

It was the Mooseheads opening the scoring in the second period. After a tangle-up between Budgell and L'Heureux, the Mooseheads went to the powerplay, where it was Zach L'Heureux capitalizing on the man advantage when he beat Satny to even the game up. Robert Orr and Jordan Dumais were the helping hands. The Isles waited until the last five minutes before getting the offense going in this frame. First, at 16:14 into the frame, it was Drew Elliott netting his ninth of the season. Brady James kicked a rebound right out onto the stick of Elliott and he didn't hesitate to fire it into the open net to reclaim the Isles lead. Helpers on the goal were credited to Brett Budgell and Patrick Guay. Then, with just 5.5 seconds left before the second break, William Trudeau worked in tight where he fired one low on the blocker side of James and beat him to give the Isles a two-goal advantage heading into the final frame. Patrick LeBlanc and Keiran Gallant were the set-up men on Trudeau's fifth of the year.

Shots were still in the Islanders favor 24-16 after forty minutes.

Offense was very present in the third period tonight. It all started with Brett Budgell staying with a loose puck in front of James where he managed to stuff it between the legs of the Mooseheads goalie just a minute and a half into the final frame. Drew Elliott and Patrick Guay picked up the assists. The Mooseheads would respond though as Jordan Dumais fired one short-side on Satny and managed to beat him to get the Moose to within two goals. Helpers were Zach L'Heureux and Markus Vidicek. Then it was the flood gates opening for the Isles offense. First, it was Sam Bowness firing one past the glove of James right off the draw at 7:15 into the frame. Next up, it was Islanders veteran Keiran Gallant sneaking it through Brady James five-hole for his second of the season at 13:05 to put the Islanders up 6-2. Helping hands were Noah Laaouan and Brett Budgell.

Keeping things going was Isles rookie Matis Ouellet sending home his first career QMJHL goal at 13:18 into the final frame when he snapped one past James. Ouellet's first career tally went unassisted. Finally, with just over a minute left, it was Ouellet again getting back-to-back goals for his first pair in the Q. Ouellet went five-hole on James for the final marker of the game in a massive third period. Helpers went to Jarrett Todd and Ryan Maynard.

Final shots were 37-28 in an 8-2 beating laid out by the Isles onto the Mooseheads.

Three Stars of the Game:

Patrick Guay(CHA)- 1 goal and 2 assists.

Drew Elliott(CHA)- 1 goal and 1 assist.

Zach L'Heureux(HAL)- 1 goal and 1 assist.

Now on a two-game roll, the Isles attention will now turn to the Cape Breton Eagles who come to town for back-to-back bouts before the Christmas break. Puck drops at 7:30 pm Friday night as the Isles look to continue their charge atop the QMJHL standings.
