Fisher Cats win fourth straight, 4-3, over Sea Dogs

Manchester, NH- Luis Perez pitched seven innings of four-hit, one-run baseball and Adam Calderone went 3-for-3 with a go-ahead two-run double and two runs scored to help steer the New Hampshire Fisher Cats to their fourth straight win, a 4-3 defeat of the Portland Sea Dogs on Friday night at Merchantsauto.com Stadium.
Perez (4-2) moved into a tie for the team lead in victories with Kyle Drabek, fanning two and walking four in matching his longest outing of the season.
Tim Collins fanned two in a scoreless inning of relief, and Danny Farquhar earned his Eastern League-leading 10th save in 11 opportunities, despite yielding a two-run homer to Chih-Hsien Chiang (1-for-3, HR, 2 RBI, BB), his second, in the top of the ninth inning.
New Hampshire (23-12) was trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the sixth when Portland reliever Eammon Portice entered the game, walked Brian Jeroloman (0-for-2, BB, R) and hit Jonathan Diaz (0-for-2, HBP, R) with a pitch. Following Darin Mastroianni's sacrifice, Calderone ripped a deep double to center that went in and out of the glove of centerfielder Che-Hsuan Lin, plating both runners for a 2-1 lead. Eric Thames (1-for-4, RBI) made it 3-1 with a line-drive single to center, scoring Calderone.
Portice (3-2) surrendered three runs on three hits and a walk, with one strikeout, in two innings to suffer the loss.
Calderone scored the all-important insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning when he drew a walk and came all the way home on an errant pick-off attempt by Sea Dogs' reliever Jason Rice, giving the Fisher Cats a 4-1 lead.
Portland starter Kyle Weiland allowed just two hits over five scoreless innings and departed with the lead when Luis Exposito (2-for-4, 2B, RBI) broke up a scoreless tie with an RBI double off Perez in the top of the sixth, staking the Sea Dogs (19-14) to a short-lived 1-0 advantage.
The Fisher Cats seek their fifth straight victory when they tangle with the Sea Dogs in the third game of their four-game series on Saturday night at 7:05pm. New Hampshire sends right-hander Kyle Drabek (4-3, 3.60) to the mound against Portland right-hander Casey Kelly (0-2, 3.48). With a crowd of 6,084 on Friday night at Merchantsauto.com Stadium, the Fisher Cats are only 4,763 fans away from welcoming their 2,000,000th fan in franchise history.
