New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
Altoona, PA - The New Hampshire Fisher Cats (24-29) swept a doubleheader from the Altoona Curve (33-23) at Blair County Ballpark Saturday night to extend their winning streak to six consecutive games. The Fisher Cats took game one of the doubleheader 11-6 as they scored five runs in the sixth and then five more in the first extra inning (the eighth inning, as the game was scheduled for seven innings) for the comeback win.
New Hampshire got on the board first in game one thanks to a solo homer by designated hitter Chip Cannon in the fourth, breaking a string of 134 consecutive at bats without a home run as a team. Altoona responded with three runs in the bottom half of the fourth, including a two-run home run by catcher David Parrish off of New Hampshire starter Kurt Isenberg. The Curve extended their lead to 6-1 in the fifth inning, plating three more runs against Isenberg, who ended up allowing six runs (five earned) on seven hits and two walks in four innings.
The Fisher Cats mounted a comeback in the sixth inning, scoring five runs to tie the game at 6-6. Third baseman Eric Arnold hit a two-run homer in the inning off of Altoona starter Mike Connolly. Connolly left the game after the home run after allowing four runs on six hits and four walks in five and a third innings. He struck out seven batters. Left fielder Adam Lind hit a two-run double in the inning, one of his three hits that extended his hit streak to 13 games.
The game remained tied at 6-6 and headed to extra innings. In the top of the eighth, the Fisher Cats scored five runs, including a three-run shot by first baseman Vito Chiaravalloti off of righty Jorge Vasquez (1-2). New Hampshire righty Rodney Ormond (2-3) retired all five hitters he faced to earn the win in relief.
In game two Altoona jumped out to the 1-0 lead after a solo homer by right fielder Ray Sadler in the second inning off of lefty Davis Romero (6-4). The Fisher Cats responded with another big inning, this time scoring five runs in the fourth against righty Chris Rojas (0-1), who allowed five runs on two hits and six walks in three and a third innings. New Hampshire's five-run inning was a result of three hits, three walks, and an error on Altoona third baseman Brandon Chaves.
The Curve cut into the lead in the fifth after a two-run triple by center fielder Vic Buttler off of Romero brought them within 5-3. The Fisher Cats extended the lead to 8-3 in the sixth inning thanks to an RBI single by shortstop Manny Mayorson and a two-run double by left fielder Adam Lind, who extended his hit streak to 14 games. Romero ended up allowing three runs (one earned) on just three hits and three walks in six innings while striking out seven. Righty Brian Wolfe pitched a scoreless seventh inning to close out the 8-3 victory.
The teams will meet again on Sunday at 6:05 PM at Blair County Ballpark in the final game of a three game series. Fisher Cats right-hander Ismael Ramirez (4-3, 1.23) will take the mound against Altoona righty Landon Jacobsen (5-5, 3.72). The Fisher Cats return home to Merchantsauto.com Stadium on Tuesday, June 6 at 6:35 PM to take on the Erie SeaWolves (Tigers) to begin a six game homestand.
