New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release

Norwich, CT - The New Hampshire Fisher Cats split a doubleheader with the Norwich Navigators Friday night at Dodd Stadium, dropping a 4-3 decision in game one before winning the nightcap, 4-2.

The Fisher Cats fell a game behind the first-place Binghamton Mets in the Northern Division standings, but maintained a five-and-a-half game lead over Norwich (59-53) for the second and final divisional playoff spot.

Right-hander Jamie Vermilyea (3-1) allowed only one unearned run on two hits over six innings to record his third win. Vermilyea struck out six and retired the last 13 batters he faced before handing the ball to Jordan DeJong. DeJong allowed an RBI single to pinch-hitter Justin Knoedler, but recovered to earn his 10th save.

New Hampshire (65-48) scored four runs on five hits in the fourth inning, highlighted by Justin Singleton's mammoth two-run home run over the right-centerfield wall off losing pitcher Joe Bateman (0-1). John Hattig started the rally with an RBI single to right, scoring John-Ford Griffin. Maikel Jova brought home Hattig with a single to left field, establishing a team record in the process by hitting safely in his 14th consecutive game.

In the opening game, Carlos Valderrama hit a slow roller to third in the bottom of the seventh inning, scoring Justin Knoedler to give the Navigators a 4-3 win.

Tyrell Godwin hit a two-out, two-run single in the top of the seventh inning against Norwich starter Matt Cain to tie the game 3-3. But Godwin dropped Knoedler's fly ball to lead off the bottom of the seventh inning, allowing the winning run to reach second base. Knoedler wound up at second on the error. He advanced to third on Julian Benavidez' ground out. Losing pitcher Dan Jackson (3-9) intentionally walked pinch hitter Brian Carter to put runners on the corners. Valderrama then hit the grounder to third baseman John Hattig, who's throw to plate was not in time.

Jackson took the loss, despite not allowing a hit or earned run in his 2/3 of an inning. Benavidez hit a two-run homer off starter Josh Banks in the third inning as Norwich opened up an early 3-0 lead.

Alberto Montes (6-4) pitched to one batter in the top of the seventh to earn the win.

The Fisher Cats and Navigators play again tomorrow (Saturday) night at 7:05pm. Right-hander Brandon League (4-3, 3.48) starts for New Hampshire against Norwich southpaw Brian Mazone (0-0, 0.00) Live coverage can be heard on the stations of the WKXL Fisher Cats Radio Network and on-line at www.fishercatsradio.com.
