Morehead City Marlins News Release
MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. - The Wilmington Sharks (4-3 second half, 20-14 overall) took their second straight game from the Morehead City Marlins (2-6 second half, 12-23 overall) by a score of 6-3 on a humid Monday evening at Big Rock Stadium.
After the game was tied 2-2 through eight innings of play, the Wilmington Sharks scored four runs in the ninth, highlighted by a bases-loaded, bases-clearing double from Casey Goss to take a 6-2 lead.
The Marlins led 1-0 after one inning after Sal Annunziata drove in Chad Shannon on a sacrifice fly. Then in the fourth inning, Annunziata struck again on a solo home run to left field that put the Marlins ahead 2-0.
The Marlins held that lead until the seventh frame, when the Sharks scored one before scoring one more run in the eighth inning to tie the game at 2-2, setting the stage for the four-run ninth.
Wesley Hatley (4-1) picked up the win for the Sharks, tossing a scoreless eighth inning while Evan Zerff (0-3) absorbed the loss, allowing four runs in 1 2/3 innings. Both starting pitchers threw the ball well but received no-decisions. Steve Landell went 7 1/3 for Morehead City, striking out a season-high eight batters while Mike Franks went seven strong innings for the Sharks, also striking out eight.
The Marlins are back on the field tomorrow evening when they travel to take on the Petersburg Generals. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. with the live broadcast on CPL WebPass beginning approximately 10 minutes prior to first pitch.
Notes: Reed Gordy was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI is his Marlins debut... Annunziata's home run was his sixth of the season... The Marlins managed just two hits over the final four innings of play.
