Madison Mallards News Release
MADISON, WI - June 27, 2011. The Madison Mallards are back on the road and will take on the Wisconsin Woodchucks at Athletic Park Monday night at 6:35 p.m.
The team finds itself in a tie for first-place in the Northwoods League's South Division after their first off-day of the season. Eau Claire was defeated Sunday by La Crosse, 11-2.
Winners in seven of their last eight games, the Mallards look to build on the success that the offense has had over the last week.
Four players had a batting average over .400 last week, led by Jordan Owen (Tennessee - Martin), who hit at a .500 clip. Andrew Barna (Davidson) also had a productive week at the plate, hitting .391. No one had a better week than Willie Argo (Illinois), who went 7-for-16 with two home runs and nine runs batted in. Over the course of the past week, the Mallards averaged 6.9 runs per game.
On the mound for Madison Monday will be Rusty Shellhorn (Texas Tech). Shellhorn, Madison's opening day starter, has been the ace of a very good staff this season, posting a 3-0 record with an ERA of 1.17. He has recorded 28 strikeouts in 23 innings of work, and also has one relief appearance to his credit.
The Woodchucks will counter with Tyler Nurdin (Temple College). The southpaw has appeared in three games this season, two as a starter, and has a record of 0-1 through 12 innings pitched. Nurdin has an ERA of 5.25 and has ten strikeouts compared to just three walks allowed.
Also leading the Woodchucks into Monday's game are Carlos Escobar (Nevada - Reno), Danny Susdorf (UC - San Diego), and Mike Gerber (Creighton). Escobar leads the team in hitting at .415 and is tied with a team-high 10 RBI. Susdorf is batting .333 in nine games, and Gerber is tops on the team in home runs with three.
After Monday's game, the Mallards will be back home Tuesday for a double-header against the Woodchucks on Tuesday, June 28th, which is a make-up of the postponed game from June 8th. Game one will start at 5:05 p.m., and game two will begin about thirty minutes after the conclusion of game one. Gates will open at 4:30 p.m., and the Duck Blind will open at 5:05 p.m. Each game will be seven innings in length. Fans who have a ticket for Tuesday's game will be allowed admittance to both games.
