Rochester Honkers News Release
(Rochester, MN) - The Honkers took a while to get their first hit, and scored their first and only run with a home run by Ryan Hambright (So, Oregon), but they made it interesting at the end, with runners on and just one out, before grounding into a double play, with runner interference.
With pinch runner Erik Mattingly (Jr, Creighton) on third, Davy Wright (So, TCU) on first, and one out in the ninth with the Honkers down by one, Brett Hambright (Jr, Oregon) hit a grounder up the middle. The Lunker's shortstop made a diving stop, flipped it to the second baseman to retire Wright, and the throw from second to first was deflected by Wright, causing it to go errant and score the apparent tying run. The umpire crew was quick on the call of runner interference however, ruling it an automatic double play, ending the game.
Wright had a great day at the plate, going 3-for-4, all singles. Ryan Hambright would be all the run production the Honkers would get, going 2-for-3, with a double, the aforementioned home run and getting hit by the pitch in his first at bat.
The Honkers got a great pitching performance out of Alex Alemann (So, St. Louis University) in his last start as a Honker this season. Alemann tied his season high in innings pitched with eight, while striking out four before yielding to Austin House (So, New Mexico) out of the bullpen for the Honkers.
The Honkers couldn't seem to catch a break, having a few hits ousted by diving catches, and what seemed to be the second home run of the season from Johnny Coy (RsJr, Wichita State) robbed at the centerfield wall.
The Honkers fall to 9-16 in the first 25 games of the season, just weeks from the All-Star Break. They will have an off day tomorrow, before traveling to Brainerd to take on the Lunkers in three more games. It will mark five consecutive games against the Lunkers in six days. Newcomer Eric Davila (Fr, Sonoma State) will see his first action as a Honker, getting the start on the mound on Wednesday, June 29, first pitch is 7:05 PM. The Honkers will play the three games in Brainerd before returning home on Saturday, July 2, to take on the Mankato Moondogs at 7:05 at Mayo Field.
