Tulsa Drillers News Release

The Tulsa Drillers concluded a six-game road trip on a winning note Monday night by defeating the Midland RockHounds 5-1. The result, combined with Frisco's win over Northwest Arkansas, moved the first-place Drillers two games in front of the Naturals with 14 games remaining in the regular season.

The Drillers trip to Frisco and Midland proved to be a big boost to their post-season hopes. They won four of their six games while Northwest Arkansas finished 0-6 in its trip to the same two cities.

Tulsa now returns home for a four-game series against Arkansas. In the series opener Tuesday night, Chaz Roe (7-2, 3.10 ERA) will pitch for the Drillers against Alexander Torres (2-1, 3.60 ERA) of the Travelers. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05PM at Drillers Stadium.

In Monday's win over the RockHounds, Tulsa broke a scoreless game with a run in the top of the fourth. Darin Holcomb led off with a single and moved to third on a base hit by Jeff Kindel. Holcomb scored the game's first run on a ground out by Michael Paulk.

The Drillers made it 2-0 in the top of the sixth as Kindel doubled and scored on a two-out base hit by Mike McKenry.

The RockHounds scored their only run in the bottom of the sixth. Tulsa starting pitcher Brandon Durden carried a one-hit shutout into the inning, but the lefthander surrendered consecutive singles to Archie Gilbert and Jemile Weeks to open the frame. Durden struck out Matt Sulentic before surrendering a sacrifice fly to Corey Wimberly that scored Gilbert to make it 2-1.

Tulsa escaped a jam in the bottom of the seventh to retain its lead. Durden allowed a leadoff single to Chris Carter and a one-out walk to Alex Valdez. Reliever Matt Reynolds took over for Durden and threw a wild pitch that advanced the runners to second and third. Reynolds then got a ground ball to first from Corey Brown. Kindel fielded the ball and threw home to retire Carter and keep the Drillers lead intact at 2-1. Gilbert grounded out to end the threat.

The Drillers added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the eighth. Paulk and McKenry drew walks, and Brad Corley brought them both home with a big, two-out double that increased the lead to 4-1.

They tacked on a final run in the ninth with three singles from Anthony Jackson, Paulk and Cole Garner.

Andrew Johnston, in a non-save situation, worked a 1-2-3 ninth to close out the victory.

Jackson led a 12-hit Tulsa attack with three singles, and Kindel, Paulk and McKenry added two hits each.

Durden improved his record to 7-2 with the win. He allowed only the one run in 6 1/3 innings, walking one and striking out five.

Since returning from Class A Modesto on July 13, Durden has made nine starts for the Drillers, going 6-0 with a 2.15 ERA.
