First Period Dooms Americans in 7-2 Loss to Winterhawks

The Americans fell to the Portland Winterhawks tonight 7-2 after allowing five straight goals in the first period. Tri-City is now 2-2-0-0 against the Winterhawks this season.

Tri-City started the game strong and opened scoring just 45 seconds into the game. Colorado Avalanche prospect Sasha Mutala set up Marc Lajoie with a pass from behind the net. Lajoie scored with a one-timer from the right circle to record his first goal of the season.

Less than a minute later Seth Jarvis scored to begin a series of five straight goals for the Winterhawks. Before the end of the first period, Portland recorded two goals from each Jarvis and Mason Manek and one from Simon Knak. Tri-City was out shot 14-7 through the first 20 minutes.

Netminder Talyn Boyko started in net for his third straight game. Boyko stopped seven of 11 shots faced before being relieved by Mason Dunsford after Portland's fourth goal. Dunsford went on to stop 26 of 29 shots faced.

The Americans returned stronger for the second period. Nick Bowman added a power play goal for the Americans off a rebound from the slot. The goal came assisted by Sasha Mutala and Lukas Dragicevic, marking Dragicevic's first WHL point. Bowman, a 20-year-old forward, has three goals over the past four games.

Late in the third period, Jarvis went on to score his third goal of the night and record a hat trick. Knak then added one last goal for the Winterhawks in the final frame.

Tri-City was out shot 40-23 tonight.

The Americans will have a day of practice tomorrow before returning to the Toyota Center to take on the Seattle Thunderbirds on Friday.
