Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Brent Headrick went six quality innings and the Mighty Mussels got just enough offense in the first inning to fend off the Lakeland Flying Tigers 3-2 Friday night at Hammond Stadium.

Headrick (3-2) went a career-high six innings, allowing only one run on three hits. He fanned six and walked three.

Fort Myers (23-17) jumped on Lakeland (17-23) starter Gio Arriera (1-4) early. After a single from Misael Urbina on the first pitch of the frame, Edouard Julien drew a walk to put two men on. The next batter was Yunior Severino, who clubbed a two-run double the gap in left. Aaron Sabato followed with a sharp single to center to plate Severino and extend the lead to 3-0.

From there, Headrick and Arriera matched zeroes until the end of the sixth inning. Arriera retired 17 of the final 19 batters he faced.

The Tigers finally got some offense going in the eighth against Mussels' reliever Brad Hanner. After Hanner worked a flawless seventh, he allowed two singles to put men at the corners with nobody out. After a strikeout, Gage Workman singled to right to cut the deficit to 3-2. A fielding error allowed the runners to advance to second and third.

With Nick Quintana batting, Hanner threw a pitch to the backstop. Fort Myers catcher Jeferson Morales pounced on the carom, flipping a perfect throw to Hanner. Hanner quickly tagged the runner to keep the game at 3-2. He then induced a fly ball from Quintana to escape the inning with the lead.

Juan Pichardo earned his third save of the season. After loading the bases with two outs, he got a groundout to Sabato to end the game.

With a 12-4 record in the month of June, the Mussels go for the series win at 7pm on Saturday. Bobby Milacki (0-0, 0.00) makes the start for Fort Myers, opposed by Ted Stuka (1-3, 6.65) of the Flying Tigers. Coverage begins at 6:45pm on the Mighty Mussels Baseball Network.
