Wilson Tobs News Release

WILSON, N.C - The Wilson Tobs provided the Fleming Stadium crowd of 3,623 fans some early inning fireworks as the Tobacconists downed the Edenton Steamers 5-2 on Wednesday night.

Wilson (11-21, 2-2) entered its opening at bat trailing by a run but managed a big first inning scoring four runs off Steamers right-hander, Kevin McCarthy (L, 0-2). Jackson Slaid singled home the tying run for the Tobs and three hitters later, Aaron Rea delivered a two-run single off the third base bag to lift Wilson to the 4-1 lead after an inning.

Edenton (21-9, 3-1) pulled to within two runs in the third inning off Andrew Istler (W, 2-0) as Michael Camporeale homered over the wall in left centerfield.

However, that would be as close as the Wilson right-hander would let the visitors get as Istler worked his second complete game of the season allowing just a pair of runs over his nine innings.

The Tobs added an insurance run in the eighth inning as Slaid singled in Harry Slaid to help lead Wilson to its first win on Independence Day since 2010.

Wilson returns to action tomorrow night at 7:05 when they travel to JP Riddle Stadium to battle the Fayetteville SwampDogs. The Tobs are back inside Historic Fleming Stadium on Friday night at 7:05 when they welcome in the Wilmington Sharks.

The Wilson Tobs are a proud member of the Coastal Plain League, the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 16th season in 2012, the CPL features 14 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both the players and hosts. Furthermore, the CPL has had over 1,000 alumni drafted and 52 alums - including 2011 AL MVP and CY Young winner Justin Verlander - make their Major League debut thus far.
