Edenton Steamers News Release
WILSON, NC - Andrew Istler threw a complete game to defeat the Steamers, allowing just six hits in the 5-2 Tobs victory at Historic Fleming Stadium on Wednesday
Making his sixth start of the season for the Steamers was right-handed pitcher Kevin McCarthy (Marist College) and his seventh appearance overall. On the other side of the diamond was right-handed pitcher Andrew Istler for the Wilson Tobs.
Edenton took an early 1-0 lead over Istler and the Tobs when lead-off man Jason Kanzler (University at Buffalo) walked to begin the inning. After a Koby Kraemer (Indiana State University) reached on a bunt single, Michael Camporeale (University of Washington) singled home Kanzler for the 1-0 lead.
It took McCarthy an inning to settle in and the Tobs took advantage, scoring four times in the bottom of the first. Goef Jimenez singled to start it off. Harry Slade then walked and Zach Houchins followed with a single. Jackson Slaid tied the game with a single and it was 1-1. Phillip Williams followed with an RBI ground out to first base and that gave Wilson a 2-1 lead. After a Joe Costigan strikeout, Aaron Rea hit a two-run single that scored Houchins and Slaid and it was 4-1 Tobs.
Edenton got a run back in the top of the third when Camporeale crushed a ball to left-center field for his sixth home run of the season and 22nd RBI of the season to cut the lead to 4-2 Tobs. He is now tied with his fellow teammates Spencer Branigan (University of Pennsylvania) and Jason Kanzler for the CPL lead in home runs.
McCarthy only allowed Tob base runners in one inning, the bottom of the fourth, during the rest of his outing. He retired the Tobs in order in the second, third, fifth and sixth innings before giving way to DJ Johnson (Mercer University). McCarthy allowed four runs (all earned) on six hits and two walks; he struck out three in his six innings of work.
Following the Camporeale home run in the third inning Edenton had just three men reach base, a Madison Beaird (Arkansas Tech University) single and a Kanzler walk in the fourth inning and Michael Massi (Mercer University) reached on an error in the sixth against Istler.
Wilson added a run in the bottom of the eighth inning against Johnson. A one out single by Harry Slade started things off. He stole second base and scored on a single by Jackson Slaid to push the Tob lead to 5-2 heading to the ninth.
Istler came on for the ninth inning to attempt a complete victory for Wilson. Beaird popped out for the first out and Massi walked. Robbie Zinsmeister hit into a 5-4-3 double play to end the ball game and give Istler his third win of the season in complete game fashion 5-2 over Edenton.
Kreamer, with his bunt single in the top of the first extended his hitting streak to 12 games with 19 hits.
