LAST TIME OUT: Columbia's series finale against West Virginia on Friday was cancelled due to rain. The Fireflies and Power actually played one inning (a scoreless inning) before the rain started falling and the tarp was called for. Because the game was cancelled and not postponed, none of the stats recorded in the first frame will be logged. The Fireflies ended up splitting the shortened "two-game" series with West Virginia. The offense blasted three homers in the two games (Scott Manea, Edgardo Fermin, Matt Winaker).
BACK, BACK, BACK...GONE: Matt Winaker went deep in the fourth inning on Thursday. The Fireflies have now recorded a homer in four straight games. That's the most consecutive games with a home run this season.
IMPROVEMENT: Hansel Moreno leads off and starts at second base on Saturday for the Fireflies. The infielder was hitting .177 just 24 games into the season. Since June 8, Moreno is batting .282 (49 games). That's the best average during that span among current Fireflies.
THE FINAL COUNTDOWN: Columbia finishes its season series with the Suns from Saturday to Tuesday (see right). The Fireflies took two out of three the last time they were at Municipal Stadium from July 11-13, the club's last series win.
STREAKIN': Matt Winaker's impressive on-base streak came to an end on Wednesday night (the lefty finished 0-for-4 against West Virginia). Winaker had reached safely in 24 straight games from July 19-August 13 and hit .294 (25-for-85) during the streak with 14 extra-base hits and 14 RBI. He hasn't been the only Firefly to have posted a lengthy on-base streak this season:
LONGEST ON-BASE STREAKS, 2018 FIREFLIES:
1. Jeremy Vasquez, 29* April 5-May 6
2. Raphael Gladu, 28 May 2-June 9
3. Matt Winaker, 24 July 19-August 13
4. Blake Tiberi, 17 June 13-July 6
5. Scott Manea, 16 April 21-May 12
*franchise and 2018 SAL record
MIRAND-AMAZING: David Miranda finished 5-for-5 at the dish on Monday and became just the third Firefly in team history to record five hits in a game:
- Enmanuel Zabala, August 22, 2016 vs. AUG - 5-for-5, 2 R, 2B, RBI
- Dan Rizzie, July 19, 2017 @ LEX - 5-for-6, 2 R, 2B, 3 RBI
- David Miranda, August 13, 2018 vs. DEL - 5-for-5, 3 R, 2B, 2 RBI
