Firecats On Verge of Clinching Playoff Spot For Third Straight Year

July 15, 2004 - arenafootball2 (af2)
Florida Firecats News Release

Estero, FL- With a win over the Laredo Law (3-10) this Saturday at Germain Arena, the Florida Firecats (8-5) will clinch a third straight birth to the arenafootball2 postseason.

If the Firecats are able to knock off the Law this Saturday, it would improve their season record to 9-5, at least a full two game lead over the Columbus Wardogs, who are fighting for the af2's final playoff spot. While the Firecats have to play Columbus on Monday, July 26, they would take the season series regardless because they have defeated the Wardogs twice already this season. The other team battling with Columbus to make the playoffs is the Memphis Xplorers. The Firecats have already won the series tiebreaker with Memphis.

Firecats' fullback Steve Gorrie will also be looking to make af2 history on Saturday night. Gorrie has already run for 421 yards this season, which is the second best season rushing effort in league history. With only 19 yards on Saturday, Gorrie will break the af2 rushing record altogether. He averages 32.4 yards a game on the turf, so history is almost inevitable. It has been eight games since Gorrie ran for less than 19 yards.

Saturday will also have many milestones on the line. Defensive specialist Quincy Sorrell, who leads the league in tackles (75.5), needs only 4.5 tackles to break teammate Roy Stabler's Firecat record. Receiver Cainon Lamb is also on the verge of breaking yet another Firecat record. He currently has 2,216 receiving yards in less than two seasons, and he needs only 113 receiving yards to break the Firecats' career record.

Lamb, along with offensive specialist Magic Benton, is also on the brink of surpassing 1,000 receiving yards. Lamb has 919 receiving yards so far, needing only 81 yards to hit the 1,000-yard mark. Benton has 974 receiving yards, and he needs only 26 yards to eclipse 1,000 yards for the first time in his four-year career.

Quarterback Ken Mastrole is also closing in on his own passing horizon. Mastrole has thrown for 2,715 yards so far this season, and he needs only 285 yards to become the first Firecat quarterback to hit the 3,000-yard mark in team history.

To go along with the possibility of clinching a playoff spot and the numerous milestones that the Firecats look to surpass, the Firecats will also be playing host to the Miami Dolphin cheerleaders on Saturday. The Dolphin cheerleaders will be at Germain Arena prior to the contest with Laredo, and they will be doing a special halftime presentation as well.

The Firecats encourage the entire community to back up their hometown team as they prepare for the 2004 postseason. Saturday night's game will be filled with a whole lot of drama, and the Miami Dolphin cheerleaders will also be performing. Reserve your tickets today! All you have to do is call (239) 390-2287.
