Flint Firebirds News Release

Mississauga, Ont. - The Flint Firebirds led the Steelheads early, but allowed seven consecutive goals to drop an 8-2 decision on the road Friday. Riley Piercey and Amadeus Lombardi scored for the Birds. Will Cranley started in his second-consecutive contest, posting 31 saves in the effort. Alessio Beglieri backstopped the Steelheads to the win, making 29 saves on 31 to earn his second win versus Flint this season. Luke Misa (2 G, 1 A), older brother of Saginaw rookie Michael Misa, and rookie Porter Martone (2 G) each scored twice to lead the Fish on offense.

The clubs traded a pair of goals in the opening 20 minutes. First, Flint scored on the game's first power play, taking the early 1-0 lead at 1:38. Amadeus Lombardi carried to the left side of the Steelheads' net before sending a back-pass to Mississauga-native Riley Piercey between the circles. Piercey one-timed it low glove-side for his 14th of the campaign, assisted by Lombardi and Coulson Pitre.

Two minutes later, James Hardie backhanded a pass from the left point to Chas Sharpe on the right. Sharpe wound and fired what appeared to be an intentional shot wide to the left of the slot. Mississauga's first-round selection (9th overall) from the 2021 OHL Priority Selection Luke Misa has positioned to tip the shot back on goal and over Cranley's right shoulder for his seventh of the season at 3:42.

Five minutes after that, Lombardi and Gavin Hayes utilized a nice give-and-go play to get Beglieri out of position. Lombardi came flying off a line change to a puck battle in the offensive zone. He picked up the puck and passed from the top of the right circle to Hayes pacing on the far side of the zone. Hayes one-timed the pass back, allowing Lombardi the short one-timer behind Beglieri for his team-leading 28th at 8:09.

The Fish answered with another even-strength marker at 15:43. Kai Schwindt carried up the right-wing wall and backhanded a pass to Jack Van Volson in the near circle. Van Volson passed through the defense to Porter Martone on the far side of the hash marks. Martone's one-timer passed just inside the near post for his eighth of the campaign before Cranley could slide across the goal mouth.

First-period shots were 14-12 to the Firebirds' advantage. Faceoffs favored the Steelheads 12-11. Flint scored one power-play goal on two chances with the man advantage and stayed out of the penalty box in period one.

Mississauga earned their first lead of the night when a slapper from Brice Cooke rang off the iron and went airborne behind Cranley. While the goaltender and his defense were searching for the missing puck, Justin DeZoate saw and positioned himself on the far side of the left circle. He settled the puck and sniped a wide-angle shot behind Cranley for his ninth of the season at 2:58. Cooke and Lucas Karmiris combined on the assists.

Flint went scoreless on one opportunity with the extra man in the center stanza while holding Mississauga scoreless twice. Shots ended even at 11 per side. The Birds outdrew the Fish 14-11 in the middle 20 minutes.

The Steelheads scored three quick goals to start the third period, extending their lead to 6-2. First, Misa netted his second of the night with a rising backhander from the slot off a pass from the end boards by Hardie. The goal was scored on the power play at 0:30 and assisted by both Hardie and Zander Veccia. Next, during 4-on-4 play, Martone backhanded a pass from the right-wing half wall to Charlie Callaghan above the hash marks. Callaghan took a couple of strides before snapping a shot into the top corner on the glove side for his seventh at 2:24. Van Volsen was credited with the second helper. Finally, it was Veccia batting a rebound out of midair for his 13th of the year at 6:06. Misa took the initial shot that rang off the iron, with Hardie getting the second helper.

The Steelheads' seventh marker was scored on a five-on-three power play at 15:40 of period three. Van Volsen made the point-to-point pass to Chas Sharpe on the left side. Sharpe took a couple of strides toward the net before rocketing a slapper midheight to the blocker side for his fifth of the campaign, assisted by Van Volsen and Callaghan.

Finally, Stevie Leskovar sprung Martone up the right-wing side with two defenders on him. He stickhandled between the two rearguards and cut across the bottom of the circle. He made a forehand-to-backhand move as he traversed the slot, finally sending the puck through the blue paint and in from the far side for his ninth at 18:46.

Final shots were 39-31, advantage Mississauga, and they led in faceoffs 32-30. The Steelheads scored twice on seven power-play chances and the Birds finished with one goal on four tries.
