Firebirds Waive Whelihan
March 11, 2003 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
Albany/Indiana Firebirds News Release
INDIANAPOLIS - Following last night's disappointing 46-38 loss to the Orlando Predators, the Indiana Firebirds of the Arena Football League announced that they have waived quarterback Craig Whelihan. Whelihan had been the Firebirds starter during the past two games.
Whelihan (6-4, 225) has played in three games this season for the Firebirds, all which have resulted in losses. Whelihan struggled during those games completing 42-of-73 (57.5%) passes for 461 yards and six touchdowns. He also threw three interceptions and had two lost fumbles. Last night against the Predators, he completed seven passes for 69 yards and had a lost fumble before being benched midway through the second quarter.
Whelihan spent four years in the NFL as a member of the San Diego Chargers. He appeared in 19 games including 14 starts during the 1997 and 1998 seasons. During his stint with the Chargers, he completed 267-of-558 passes for 3,160 yards and fourteen touchdowns. In 2001, Whelihan went on to play for the Orlando Predators and led them to an 8-5 record. That season he completed 224-of-377 pass attempts for 3,004 yards (3rd best in franchise history) and 60 touchdown passes (2nd best in franchise history) on his way to First-Team All-Rookie honors.
With Whelihan's departure, Jose Davis is the only active quarterback on the Firebirds roster. Last night Davis ignited the Firebirds offense, completing 16-of-21 passes for 166 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for 17 yards and a touchdown. Three-year starter Raymond Philyaw is still on the injured reserve list with a dislocated right index finger. The time table for Philyaw's return is still uncertain.
The 'Birds return home on Sunday to face the Los Angeles Avengers in the first of a two-game home stand. The game can be heard on the Indiana Firebirds' Radio Network, which includes ESPN Radio 950 AM (Indianapolis), WPZZ 95.9 FM (Franklin, IN), ESPN Radio 1130 AM (Brazil) and ESPN Radio 1300 AM (Terre Haute). Kickoff is scheduled for 12:00 noon. Tickets to that game can be purchased at the Conseco Fieldhouse Box Office, all Ticketmaster Outlets, Ticketmaster charge-by-phone at 317-239-5151 and firebirds.com.
