
AFL Honors Players of the Week
March 11, 2003 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I) News Release
NEW YORK â San Jose SaberCats offensive specialist AARON BAILEY, Arizona Rattlers wide receiver/defensive back RANDY GATEWOOD and Dallas Desperados wide receiver/linebacker ANDY MCCULLOUGH have been named Offensive Player, ADT Defensive Player and Ironman of the Week, respectively, for Week 6 of the 2003 season.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK Bailey (5-10, 190, Louisville), in his third AFL season, hauled in five receptions for 104 yards and a touchdown, while adding a team-record four rushing touchdowns in the SaberCats' 71-49 victory against the Chicago Rush (2-4) on Sunday. The former Cardinal's 2003 season and team debut came against the AFL's No. 2 defense (232.3 YYPG and 43.0 PPG) and helped keep the SaberCats (4-2) tied for the Western Division lead with the Los Angeles Avengers. This marks the second time Bailey has earned an AFL weekly honor.
ADT DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK Gatewood (6-0, 185, UNLV), who is in his eighth AFL season, led the Arizona Rattlers by recording two interceptions, a tackle, and a pass breakup that allowed the Rattlers (3-3) to secure the 51-41 home victory over the Detroit Fury (3-3) on Sunday. This was the third time this season that the former Running Rebel recorded a two-interception performance. This marks the fourth time Gatewood has earned an AFL weekly honor.
IRONMAN OF THE WEEK McCullough (6-4, 210, Tennessee), who is in his second AFL season, led the Desperados (4-2) with his two-way performance during their 73-55 home victory over the Colorado Crush (1-5) on Friday. The former Volunteer hauled in six passes for 67 yards, recorded an interception, a pass breakup and recovered a fumble which he returned for a touchdown late in the fourth quarter to secure the win for Dallas. This marks the first time that McCullough has earned an AFL weekly honor.
Offensive Player of the Week candidates included: Arizona's Chris Horn, Dallas' Jim Kubiak, Georgia's Donnie Davis and Markeith Cooper, Las Vegas' Sean Riley, Los Angeles' Tony Graziani, Orlando's Travis McGriff and Tampa Bay's John Kaleo.
ADT Defensive Player of the Week candidates included: Carolina's Michael Blair, Georgia's Jermaine Smith, Las Vegas' T.J. Hill, Los Angeles' Siaha Burley, Orlando's E.J. Burt, San Jose's Sam Hernandez and Tampa Bay's B.J. Cohen.
Ironman of the Week candidates included: Arizona's Randy Gatewood, Georgia's Dan Curran, Las Vegas' Sedrick Robinson, Los Angeles' Kevin Ingram, Orlando' s Thabiti Davis, San Jose's Rashied Davis and Tampa Bay's Lawrence Samuels.
