Firebirds Set to Go Camping Next Week

December 3, 2003 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
Albany/Indiana Firebirds News Release

INDIANAPOLIS - The Indiana Firebirds of the Arena Football League have scheduled perhaps their busiest week of this 2004 off-season for next week, the second week of December. The team will be holding their only free agent tryout camp for the upcoming season, as well as bringing in their current players for the Firebirds' first ever mini-camp.

On Monday, December 8th, Head Coach Steve DeBerg will conduct his only free agent tryout for the 2004 AFL season. The tryout is open to the public and pre-registration is available by visiting www.firebirds.com. The tryout will begin promptly at 9:00am with a one-hour registration period prior. The event will be held at The SportsZone, located at 6601 Coffman Road in Indianapolis and should run until approximately 1:00pm. All interested players must submit a $60 registration fee, which includes a t-shirt and ticket to a 2004 Firebirds home game.

On Wednesday, December 11th, DeBerg and staff will conduct the first-ever Indiana Firebirds Mini-Camp. The three day event will also be held at the SportsZone, with two sessions each on Thursday and Friday and one morning session being held on Saturday. Almost all of the players signed to the team's current roster will be in attendance, including free agent offensive specialist, Mike Horacek, and former Indianapolis Colts lineman, Hans Olsen.

"With all of the free agents we have signed thus far, we thought that as a coaching staff it would be important to get the guys in here a month before training camp and get to work", commented DeBerg. "Most teams just come to training camp three days early, but we felt it would be to our benefit to introduce the guys to our system and give them some time to retain it until we put the pads on in January".

Two practices will be held on Thursday (12/11) and Friday (12/12). The first session will run from 7:00am until 9:00am and the second will be held from 11:00am until 1:00am. The only time the team will conduct practice on Saturday (12/13) is 7:00-9:00am. All media are invited to attend and should arrive a minimum of 15 minutes prior to any practice session to gain access to the players/coaches, or plan on getting them after any session.

Indiana has signed 22 free agents since the signing period began back in October. Along with re-signing WR/LB Eddie Brown and FB/LB Leroy Thompson, both of whom have spent their entire careers with the Firebirds, the team will bring in a list NFL veterans that includes WR/DB Tony Simmons (New England Patriots, Indianapolis Colts, NY Giants), OL/DL Tom Burke (Arizona Cardinals), DS Robert Bean (Cincinnati Bengals, Jacksonville Jaguars) and QB Kevin Daft (Tennessee Titans).

Firebirds' season tickets for the 2004 season are on sale now and can be purchased by calling a Firebirds' ticket representative at 317.472.8080. Firebirds merchandise is also available at Home Court Gift Shop. For merchandise information, please call 317.917.2755.
