Brampton Steelheads News Release
Flint, MI - The Mississauga Steelheads travelled south of the border to take on the Flint Firebirds in the first game of their Michigan road trip. The Steelheads were without Ethan Del Mastro, who is nearly set to return to the team from the World U-17 Hockey Challenge, and Adam Varga, who was out of the lineup with an upper body injury.
Thomas Harley opened the scoring, as Aidan Prueter found him in the high slot from behind the net and made no mistake in firing a shot post Luke Cavallin. Nick Isaacson increased the lead late in the first, as he picked up a rebound off a shot from Richard Whittaker and put the puck in an open net. The Steelheads added one more before the end of the period, as Nicholas Canade blasted a slapshot from the blueline to make it 3-0.
The Fish had plenty of scoring chances in the second period, as Ty Collins found Keean Washkurak in front of the net on a 2-on-1, but the shot was directed off the outside of the post. With the Steelheads in the box for a hooking penalty, it was Riley McCourt who picked up his own rebound in the slot and beat Edmonds up high. The Firebirds would add one more to make the score 3-2, as McCourt scored his second of the game. The Steelheads took their lead into the third period, with Edmonds stopping 26/28 shots on goal (.929 SV%) through 40 minutes of play.
Flint tied the game early in the third, with Connor Roberts redirecting a low point shot from Owen Lalonde past Edmonds. With three minutes left in the game, Evgeniy Oksentyuk was awarded a penalty shot after receiving a slash on a breakaway. Oksentyuk skated in slowly, patiently out waiting Edmonds just before sliding one past his outreached pad to give Flint a 4-3 lead. The Steelheads would battle hard to find the equalizer, but the Firebirds would add an empty netter to make the score a final of 5-3.
Nick Isaacson increased his goal scoring streak to three games (5G, 1A), while Nicholas Canade (1G, 1A) and Richard Whittaker (2A) recorded multi-point efforts in the loss. Kai Edmonds stopped 41/44 shots on goal (.911 SV%) in the contest.
