Flint Firebirds News Release
Flint, Mich. - The Flint Firebirds announced today that they have acquired defenseman Blake Smith, a 2025 5th-round pick from the Oshawa Generals for defenseman Luca D'Amato and a 2023 8th-round pick.
"We thank Luca for all he has done for us here with the Flint Firebirds organization," Head Coach and General Manager Ted Dent said. "Luca is a great hockey player and was an integral part of our success last season. He competed hard and was very durable playing in all but one regular season game and throughout our run to the Western Conference Finals. He was a pleasure to coach and our group wishes him nothing but the best in Oshawa."
The 2004-born Smith stands at 6-foot-4, 202-pounds. The left-shot defenseman was given a 'C' rating by NHL Central Scouting's Preliminary Rankings. A 'C' rating projects a player to be drafted between the 4th and 6th rounds.
The former 7th-round pick is known for his shot-blocking abilities and his physical, shutdown style of defense. He has 3 G and 3 A in 66 career games played with the Gens.
"Blake will provide our defensive core with some additional size and strength on the blue line," Dent said. "He has a long reach and takes pride in defending which can help our group when we are playing without the puck and during penalty kill situations."
