FireAntz Split Two at Home

[Fayetteville, N.C.]-- The Fayetteville FireAntz of the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) hosted two games at home over the weekend. On Friday the FireAntz played host to the Asheville Aces and on Saturday the Macon Trax came to town.

Friday February 18th (vs. Asheville): The FireAntz hosted the Asheville Aces, the only team that for the season had an above .500 record against them, for the season (4-2.)

The FireAntz netted the only goal of the period off the stick of newcomer Jamie Miller (1st as a FireAnt, 4th of the season.) Miller had come to the FireAntz earlier in the week via a trade with Winston-Salem for the rights to Bryan Lachapelle.

In the second period the FireAntz blew the game open tallying four times. Goals by Tyler Perry (18th), Steve Roberts (32nd), Jeff Coulter (5th), and George Nistas (20th) gave the FireAntz a 5-0 lead. Joel Petkoff scored on the power play for Asheville to send the game to the third period at 5-1.

Each team got a goal in the third (Chris Kovalcik for Asheville and Josh Welter for Fayetteville) to provide the final score, 6-2. The FireAntz improved their record on the season to 26-17.

The FireAntz outshot Asheville 57-29.

Saturday February 19th (vs. Macon): The Macon Trax came to Fayetteville for the first time since November 25th.

Macon got on the board early as Steve Zoryk deposited one in the back of the net just 1;10 into the game. The FireAntz' George Nistas (21st) answered at 5:31 to tie the game at 1. Chris Duggan gave the Trax the 2-1 lead going into the second period.

In the second, Mark Phenow (7th) evened the score at the 1:02 mark, wristing one past goaltender Terry Denike.

After Ryan Rivard took a hooking penalty, David Deeves broke in short-handed and beat Glen Ridler 5-hole to give Macon a 3-2 advantage. Deeves then iced the game less than three minutes later much to the dismay of over 5,000 fans in attendance. Macon won 4-2.

Macon outshot the FireAntz 40-34.

The FireAntz play 4 road games in 5 nights this week. They are 13-8 on the road this season.

Kory Baker is tied for 2nd in the SPHL with 43 assists.

Steve Roberts is tied for 1st in the SPHL with 6 game-winning goals.

The FireAntz next home games is Friday, March 4th against the Winston-Salem Polar Twins on "Verizon Wireless Puck Giveaway Night."
