Fayetteville Marksmen News Release

[FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.] - The Fayetteville FireAntz of the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) played in Game 7 of the President's Cup finals, last night, and fell to the Knoxville Ice Bears 3-1. The FireAntz held a three games to two advantage, going back to Knoxville, for Games 6 and 7. After winning both games on home ice the Ice Bears captured their second consecutive President's Cup.

The FireAntz held a 4-3 lead late in the 3rd period in Game 6. When Knoxville pulled goaltender Kirk Irving for an extra attacker, Tim Vitek tied the game with just 1:11 remaining. In overtime, Knoxville would capitalize on their late fortune and steal Game 6, and ulitmately the President's Cup, from the FireAntz. Bobby Joe Pelkey completed his hat-trick with the overtime winner at 11:52. Guy St. Vincent was tremendous for the FireAntz, turning aside 59 of 64 shots, in defeat.

Knoxville, at home, would take the momentum from their Game 6 victory and use it early in Game 7. Shaun Norrie gave the Ice Bears a 1-0 advantage just 3:21 into the contest. The teams traded goals late in the 1st frame by Brett McConnachie and Chris Rebernik, and Knoxville led 2-1 at the intermission.

Another goal by Rebernik in the second period would be all that the Ice Bears and goaltender Kirk Irving would need. Knoxville held on to win the game, 3-1, and capture their second consecutive President's Cup.
