
FireAntz Continue Winning Ways

[Fayetteville, N.C.] âThe Fayetteville FireAntz of the Southern Professional Hockey League played three games in three nights over the weekend. On Thursday they traveled to Jacksonville, Friday they were in Macon and on Saturday they returned home to play Huntsville.
Thursday December 9th (at Jacksonville): The FireAntz went in to Jacksonville to take on the 8-5 Barracudas. The initial meeting between the two was November 19th, a game at the Crown Coliseum that the FireAntz won 4-1, handing the Barracudas their first defeat after a 5-0 start. This time the game would be played at the Jacksonville Veterans Memorial.
The Barracudas jumped out in front a goal by Kory Baker at the 8:00 mark of the first period. The FireAntz quickly answered, however, on Shawn Roed's 4th of the season at 8:48. Steve Roberts then netted a power play goal, his 10th, at 18:05 to give the FireAntz a 2-1 lead.
In the second period Stephen Margeson got his first of the season to give the FireAntz a 3-1 lead going into the third. Shawn Roed got an empty-netter at 19:11 for his second of the game and 5th of the season.
The FireAntz outshot the Barracudas 43-35.
FireAntz 6-9 on the season.
Friday December 10th (at Macon): The FireAntz and Trax split their prior two contests, a 3-0 FireAntz victory on November 6th and a 3-2 Macon win on November 25th, both games at the Crown Coliseum in Fayetteville.
Macon got on the board first in the 1st period on a goal by Art Mnatsakanov at 9:22. Bryan Lachapelle answered back at 12:12 netting his 6th of the season. John Gurskis, of Macon, capped the scoring in the first with a power-play goal at 15:50.
The FireAntz tied it at 2 early in the 2nd period on Shawn Roed's 6th of the year at 2:02. But two goals by Macon, one by Craig Miller on the powerplay and one by John Gurskis (his second of the game), gave the Trax a 4-2 edge after two.
The FireAntz clawed back into the game in the third period. Shawn Roed tallied his second of the game and 7th of the season at 5:25. Bryan Lachapelle followed suit netting his second of the game and 7th of the season just 23 seconds later to knot the game at 4. But Macon wasn't done yet. Art Mnatsakanov scored his second of the game, on the powerplay, at 8:47 and Steve Zoryk got an empty-netter at 19:55 to seal the Trax 6-4 victory.
Macon outshot the FireAntz 38-37.
FireAntz 6-10 on the season.
December 11th (vs. Huntsville): This was the first meeting of the season between the two teams. Huntsville came into the game 8-7 for the year. The game was played on "Local Heroes Night" at the Crown Coliseum in Fayetteville in front of 4,127 fans.
Shawn Roed opened the scoring on the night for the FireAntz, getting his 8th of the season and 5th in the three games over the weekend, on the powerplay at 8:38 of the first period. He would also tally 3 assists in the game.
The FireAntz kept the pressure on in the second netting three quick goals. Steve Roberts gave the club a 2-0 lead on his 11th of the year at 3:01. Sean Edwards continued his hot play of late with his 3rd of the season at 5:56. Brent Rumble got on the board at 7:26 with a powerplay goal to give the FireAntz a 4-0 lead. Mike Degurse for Huntsville would get one back at 10:44 to bring the game closer at 4-1.
In the third period FireAntz newcomer Paul Vincent was called for hooking at 1:43 and Huntsville quickly capitalized getting a powerplay goal from Dan Buccella at 2:39. But that is as close as the Havoc would get. Brent Rumble added an insurance goal, his second of the game and 4th of the season at 18:27 and would cap the scoring for the evening at 5-2.
The FireAntz outshot Huntsville 44-37.
FireAntz 7-10 on the season.
