Chicago Fire FC News Release

CHICAGO, IL (June 26, 2009) - The Chicago Fire will play their final match of SuperLiga Group A play this Saturday, June 27, as the team lines up against Tigres UANL of the Mexican Primera Division at home in TOYOTA PARK (7 p.m. CT, TeleFutura). The Fire sit atop the Group A table, earning six points in two games played, and the team looks to secure a spot in the SuperLiga semifinals this Saturday.

With a win or tie against Tigres UANL on Saturday, the Fire will claim one of the two semifinal berths in Group A. If the Fire lose, the only scenario in which they will not advance is if they lose by two or more goals AND San Luis defeats Chivas USA. Just two teams from each of the two groups (A and B) will advance to the semifinal round that will be played on July 15 - times and locations to be announced at a later date.

Tigres UANL will have their work cut out for them as the Fire are not only undefeated in the tournament (2-0-0), but the defense has yet to give up a goal, shutting out both San Luis and Chivas USA. Despite losing the services of defender Gonzalo Segares, to national team duty with Costa Rica, Chicago head coach Denis Hamlett will once again have the services of defender Bakary Soumare at his disposal. Soumare returned to the club this week after playing 90 minutes for Mali in their 3-1 win over Benin in a World Cup Qualifier on Sunday, June 21.

Three days after completing SuperLiga group play, the Fire will travel to North Caroline to face the Wilmington Hammerheads in a third round Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup game at Legion Stadium (6 p.m. CT). The Fire will return to MLS league play on July 4th as the team travels to Colorado to face the Rapids at Dick's Sporting Goods Park (8 p.m. CT).
