CHICAGO, IL - The Chicago Fire (10-6-8, 38 points) fell to Eastern Conference rival D.C. United (7-5-11, 32 points) tonight 1-0 at TOYOTA PARK. Despite the loss, the Fire remain in second place, just one point behind Eastern Conference leading Columbus Crew (39 points) and five points ahead of third place New England Revolution (33 points).
D.C. opened scoring in the 11th minute of play as Christian Gomez sent a free kick from 25 yards out into the area for defender Bryan Namoff running towards the penalty spot. Namoff connected with the ball at the top of the six-yard box, sending a header shot towards the left side of the net. The ball bounced just inside post for the game-winning goal.
The Fire will return to action on Saturday, September 12th as the team travels to Sandy, Utah to face Real Salt Lake at Rio Tinto Stadium (8 p.m. CT, Fox Soccer Channel).
