Erie Otters News Release

Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario - A dominant 7-3 victory over the then top team in the Eastern Conference, Sudbury, on Friday night would lead the Erie Otters into Sault Ste. Marie for a Sunday afternoon showdown with the Greyhounds. The Otters would have an opportunity in the game to sweep the season series against the Soo, thanks to a thrilling Thanksgiving victory on home ice. Taking on one of the top teams in the OHL would be no easy task, and especially as the tail end of three game weekend.

After an offensive outburst on Friday, Erie would muster just three total shots in the opening 20 of the contest - with the last two coming in the final three minutes. Soo, on the opposing side, would score twice in the opening four minutes of the game, as Caeden Carlisle (3) and Marco Mignosa (19) would give the Greyhounds a 2-0 lead. Erie's defense would hold solid from here, allowing just four shots the remainder of the frame, but trail 2-0 and outshot 11-3 through 20.

A much better start to the second period would see the Otters create more offensive opportunities enroute to finding nine total shots. Even with Erie's upstart start, it would still be the Greyhounds who would continue the offensive success as Justin Cloutier (18) with 4:21 gone by. Malcolm Spence and Carey Terrance would create solid offensive end opportunity for Erie, leading to another birthday-weekend goal for Sam Alfano (15) near the halfway mark of the game. The two-goal deficit Erie had gotten itself to from the goal would not last long, as Gavin Hayes (23, PPG) would strike on the lone power play of the day through 40 for the Soo. Erie would go into the third down 4-1, outshot 22-12.

Bad news would begin the period for Erie, as they would lose Alexis Daviault with a five-minute major. It would be a four-on-four for the opening two minutes, as Jordan D'Intino would be marked with a matching minor. Erie would successfully kill off this, and another ensuing two minute minor penalty, as Erie would spend a total of 10.5 minutes on the penalty kill in the third. Following the initial two kills, Erie would finally capitalize on some earned momentum, as Pano Fimis (14) would earn his 13th point in seven games and make it a two-goal game with still over 11 minutes to go. On the third power play of the period for the Greyhounds, Gavin Hayes (24, PPG) would put what would feel like the nail in the coffin with just over six to go. An empty-net goal from Justin Cloutier (19, ENG) would seal the deal, as Erie would fall 6-2 in the road-finale, outshot 33-19. This would be Erie's first loss to the Soo since 2021.

The Erie Otters make the long trek back to northwest Pennsylvania, as they prepare to close out four-straight on the road by battling the Oshawa Generals on Friday, January 26. This will be Erie's first meeting of the season with Oshawa, and only at the Tribute Communities Centre. Erie will then host the hottest team in junior hockey and their rivals, the London Knights, on Saturday, January 27 for Star Wars Night (pres. by the Millcreek Mall), with the first 2500 fans in attendance receiving a free Let's Go Otters/Star Wars poster.
