Fightins Solid Effort Not Enough as they Fall 4-1 to Portland

The Fightins offense came to life as they recorded seven hits but only managed one run as the Portland Sea Dogs defeated the Fightin Phils 4-1.

The Portland Sea Dogs struck first for the consecutive night as Sean Coyle hit a one-out solo home run off Severino Gonzalez in the top of the second inning to give the Sea Dogs a 1-0 lead. The Fightins threatened with two runners on and two outs in the bottom of the second inning but Edgar Duran was caught stealing in an attempt to swipe second base.

The Fightins finally scored their first run of the season in the bottom of the third inning to tie the game at 1-1. After Cameron Perkins hit a double with two outs off Sea Dogs starter Keith Couch (1-0), he scored on a throwing error by left-fielder Bo Caldwell off a single by Kelly Dugan. Severino Gonzalez pitched five innings and allowed one run off four hits. He walked one batter and recorded three strikeouts.

The Sea Dogs broke the game open as they scored three runs off Fightin Phils reliever Ryan O'Sullivan (0-1) to take a 4-1 lead. With the bases loaded and one out, Blake Swihart hit a RBI single to break the 1-1 tie and give Portland a 2-1 lead. Sean Coyle struck again as he hit a RBI single that brought in two runs, one via a throwing error by Albert Cartwright to give the Sea Dogs a 4-1 lead.

Austin Wright pitched two scoreless innings in relief and gave up one hit, one walk with one strikeout. Justin Friend pitched a scoreless top of the ninth inning and and gave up one hit and one walk.

The Fightins will be sending LHP Hoby Milner to the mound on Saturday night as he'll be opposed by fellow lefty Micky Pena of Portland. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 pm at FirstEnergy Stadium.
