New Britain Rock Cats News Release
New Britain, CT - The Rock Cats snuck by the visiting Richmond Flying Squirrels by the score of 4-3 on Friday morning at New Britain Stadium. After working their way back from a 3-1 deficit, newcomer DH Brandon Waring launched a go-ahead solo homerun off of RHP Edwin Quirarte and RHP Lester Oliveros worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning to earn his first save of 2014.
Visiting Richmond would strike first, putting up a run in the opening frame against Rock Cats starter RHP D.J. Baxendale. 1B Angel Villalona sent a single up the middle to send home CF Jarrett Parker, who reached on an infield-style single.
The Cats would even up the game in the bottom of the fourth when a LF Reynaldo Rodriguez double off the wall in left-center drove home 3B Nate Hanson. Hanson led off the inning with a single out to right-center.
Richmond pulled ahead once again the fifth courtesy of a sacrifice fly out to deep right by SS Matt Duffy. The fly ball scored RF Brett Krill, who led off the inning with a single.
Krill would put the visitors up 3-1 with a chopper to SS Brad Boyer that went for a fielder's choice but was enough to bring home C Myles Schroder.
New Britain would claw back to tie the game 3-3 in the bottom of the sixth, taking advantage of three walks by Richmond reliever LHP Bryce Bandilla, who took over for starter RHP Clayton Blackburn. Hanson and Waring both walked and scored runs for the Cats to even up the contest.
The home club would take the lead for the first time in the bottom of the eighth when Waring, who is known for his power around the Eastern League, launched a solo shot over the left field wall to put New Britain ahead 4-3.
Oliveros, who has pitched at the Major League level for both Detroit and Minnesota, slammed the door in the ninth to earn the save.
RHP Ryan O'Rourke earned the win in relief, allowing one hit and striking out one over 1 1/3 innings of work.
The Rock Cats and Flying Squirrels will tangle again Saturday afternoon at 1:35 p.m. It will be a battle of southpaws as New Britain sends LHP Taylor Rogers to the hill while the visitors throw out LHP Adalberto Mejia.
