
Fightins Falter Late to Flying Squirrels

The Reading Fightin Phils saw their 4-3 lead vanquish quickly in the top of the eighth inning as the Richmond Flying Squirrels scored six runs to take a 9-4 lead. The Flying Squirrels eventually won the game 11-5 after scoring two more runs in the top of the ninth inning.
The Fightin Phils and Richmond Flying Squirrels got underway on time but had to stop due to rain. The rain delay was one hour and 32 minutes long. Perci Garner started the game for the Fightin Phils and did not return as he threw two shutout innings. Ty Blach started for the Flying Squirrels and did not return as he retired the side in the bottom of the first inning.
Richmond got going early against Fightin Phils reliever Tyler Knigge as they scored three runs in the top of the third inning to take a 3-0 lead. Jarrett Parker hit a two RBI double with the bases loaded and Angel Villalona hit a RBI groundout to plate a run.
The Fightin Phils kept true to their name as Tommy Joseph hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning off Flying Squirrels reliever Phil McCormick to cut the lead to 3-2. Flying Squirrels reliever Edwin Quirarte left with two runners on base and reliever Cody Hall ended up loading the bases in the bottom of the seventh inning. Edgar Duran came through with a two RBI single to give the Fightin Phils a 4-3 lead.
The Richmond Flying Squirrels scored four runs off Fightin Phils reliever Jay Johnson and two runs off reliever Nefi Ogando in the top of the eighth inning to take a 9-4 lead. Richmond added two more runs in the top of the ninth inning off reliever Austin Wright. Tommy Joseph notched his third RBI of the game off reliever Austin Fleet on a groundout in the bottom of the ninth inning to score Kelly Dugan and cut the Flying Squirrels lead to 11-5.
The rubber match will take place on Wednesday evening at FirstEnergy Stadium. The Fightin Phils will send Jesse Biddle (1-2, 3.80 ERA) to the mound. First pitch is at 6:35 pm.
