New Britain Snaps Streak; Defeats New Hampshire 2-1

New Britain Rock Cats News Release


New Britain, CT - The Rock Cats snuck by the New Hampshire Fisher Cats by the score of 2-1 on Tuesday evening at New Britain Stadium. The victory put an end to a five-game losing streak dating back to April 14 th in New Hampshire.

An eighth inning double by 2B Tony Thomas followed by a single from SS Aderlin Mejia broke a 1-1 tie and RHP Cole Johnson came on with one on in the ninth to close the game, earning his first save of the year.

The home team took the lead on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth. 3B Brandon Waring, who led off the inning with a double, came home when CF Mike Kvasnicka lifted a pitch deep enough to center to give New Britain the 1-0 lead.

New Hampshire's bats awoke in the top of the eighth against reliever LHP Jim Fuller, picking up a run on two doubles and tying the ballgame at one. LF Michael Crouse led off the inning with a double to left-center and was sent home on a double from CF Jonathan Jones that kicked around the left field corner.

The Rock Cats rallied with two outs in the bottom of the eighth, first getting a spark from Thomas with a double out to left. Mejia's second hit of the night was a liner up the middle off of New Hampshire's starter RHP Casey Lawrence to bring home the speedy second baseman and give the Cats a lead they would not give up.

New Britain starter RHP Virgil Vasquez made his first start of 2014 and in doing so, he put together the longest outing for any Rock Cats starter this season - three hits and six strikeouts over seven shutout innings. Rock Cats reliever Fuller earned his first win of the season (1-0).

Lawerence scattered seven hits over 7 2/3 innings, allowing just two runs while walking none and striking out seven but was ultimately tagged with his first loss of the season (1-1).

The start of Tuesday's contest was delayed for 41 minutes due to rainy conditions.

The Rock Cats play the third game of a four game series Wednesday night at 6:35 p.m. New Britain sends RHP D.J. Baxendale to the hill to face-off against Fisher Cats starter RHP Aaron Sanchez.
