Fighting Saints Overwhelm Gamblers in Weekend Sweep

September 11, 2021 - United States Hockey League (USHL) - Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release

DUBUQUE, Iowa - It was never in doubt. The Dubuque Fighting Saints completely controlled play throughout the first two periods, and received steady goaltending from Paxton Geisel, en route to a weekend sweep of the Green Bay Gamblers. Five different Saints scored a goal, and no player posted more than one point in a 5-1 drubbing of the Gamblers on Saturday night at the Mystique Community Ice Center.

Much like the night prior, a dominant first period effort put Dubuque in front, and ultimately, for good. Just under four minutes into the first period, Samuel Sjölund spotted Tristan Lemyre chugging down the right wing. His snap shot beat goaltender Aaron Randazzo to the blocker side to open the scoring. Lucas Ölvestad's goal at 16:53 proved to be the game-winning goal.

While Green Bay got on the board on one of their two shots on goal in the second period, Dubuque posted three of their own. Peter Kramer notched his first of the preseason, Jaxson Ezman scored off of a broken play, and Primo Self added his second goal in as many games.

Dubuque outshot Green Bay 25-5 through two periods of play, and did not relent on forechecking pressure throughout the night.

Geisel, who made his first start against USHL competition, did what was necessary. He made 15 saves, including his best of the night on a point-blank chance from Sawyer Scholl. He also helped the penalty killers keep the Gamblers off the board on their only power play chance- a far cry from Green Bay's six power play chances the night before.

As planned, Randazzo was pulled halfway through the game, after making 13 saves on 16 shots, by Klayton Knapp, who made 14 saves on 16 shots for Green Bay.

The Fighting Saints will wrap up the preseason with a pair of games against the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders next Friday and Saturday at the Mystique Community Ice Center. Tickets are available at DubuqueFightingSaints.com.
