Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
DUBUQUE, Iowa - Matt Morris sparkled in net, and the Fighting Saints found an offensive punch when it counted, shutting out the Des Moines Buccaneers 2-0 at the Mystique Community Ice Center on Wednesday night.
Neither team was able to score in the first period, though the Fighting Saints outshot the Buccaneers 9-4 in the opening twenty minutes. Dubuque was 0-for-1 on the powerplay, and had some powerplay time remaining as the second period got underway.
The Fighting Saints could not score on that powerplay chance, but a great individual effort from their captain put them onto the scoreboard midway through the period. Zemgus Girgensons corralled the puck in the slot, and fired it onto Pheonix Copley, who turned it away, with the puck coming to rest on the back of the cage. Girgensons freed the puck from behind the net and jammed it in on a wrap-around chance, giving the Fighting Saints a 1-0 lead that they would hold into the third period.
Dubuque hung on to the 1-0 lead throughout the third period. The Buccaneers took a penalty late in the third period to go shorthanded, but pulled their goaltender to even up the skaters at 5-on-5. With forty seconds remaining in the game, Zemgus Girgensons cleared the puck out of the zone, finding TJ Moor in the process. Moor passed to Tyler Lundey, who fed the puck back to Moor for an empty net goal.
The 2-0 win was Morris' second shutout of the season. He made 25 saves in the victory, and Head Coach Jim Montgomery credited him with winning the game for the Fighting Saints with his third period performance.
The Fighting Saints will play the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders two times this weekend, travelling to the Stable on Friday night and returning home for the second game of the series on Saturday night.
