March 30, 2024 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
DUBUQUE, IA - The Dubuque Fighting Saints (37-12-3-4, 81 pts) host the USA NTDP U18s (15-8-0-1, 31 pts) to wrap up a weekend series on Saturday night.
Here are five things to know ahead of the matchup:
1. Milestone Moment
Noah Powell scored his third hat trick of the season in Friday night's 5-4 shootout loss to set the Saints' single season scoring record. Powell scored twice in the second period to help tie the game at three for Dubuque.
In the third, Powell scored his 14th power-play goal of the season and 38th overall to set the Saints' single-season high for goals scored. The record was set in 2012-13 by Mike Szmatula.
2. Playoff Push
The Fighting Saints earned a point for the sixth-straight game in Friday's shootout loss to drop their magic number to four points to clinch the East's top seed. Six games remain on the Saints' regular season schedule ahead of Saturday's series finale.
Dubuque has points in eight of its last 10 games, tied for the best mark in the Eastern Conference with Madison. Friday's loss ended a six-game stretch for the Saints allowing two goals or less to the opposition.
3. Minny Magic
The Saints put Erik Påhlsson and Beckett Hendrickson together onto a line with Juraj Pekarcik six games ago, and the trio has torched the opposition since. The line has combined for four goals and 21 points in six games since.
Two future Minnesota Gophers, Påhlsson and Hendrickson, have combined for three of those goals and 12 points. Påhlsson has points in 15 of his last 16 contests, while Hendrickson has nine points in his 10 games for Dubuque.
4. Saints Specials
The Fighting Saints penalty continued its strong play with a pair of successful kills on Friday night. Entering the weekend, USA's power play was converting at a 34.6% rate in USHL games. The Saints' kill leads the East at 84.8% this season.
Dubuque slowed USA in both of its chances to keep the USA power play off the board. Top prospect James Hagens scored and added an assist in Friday's game, but the Saints were able to hold prolific goal-scorer Cole Eiserman off the board in the weekend-opener.
5. Developing Details
USA's 18Us play just one more USHL contest after Saturday night's matchup. Both previous games between the teams have gone to overtime this season.
USA took the season-opener 6-5 in overtime at the showcase in Pittsburgh before Friday night's shootout-win over the Saints.
Friday's game begins at 7:05 p.m. CDT and tickets can be purchased here. The game can be found on Eagle 102.3 and FloHockey.
