Frisco Fighters News Release
TULSA - To this point, the Red River Rumble hasn't really been much of a remarkable regional rivalry.
Visiting the Tulsa Oilers on Saturday night, the Fighters raced out to a 20-0 second-quarter edge, led by 30 at the midway point, and cruised to a 60-32 win.
Frisco (4-0) moves to 4-0 all-time against the Oilers, having also beaten them in overtime to get this season underway last month. The Fighters' output this time around was their highest thus far during this go-round.
A Tulsa (2-2) pass interference penalty expedited Frisco's three-play opening march, which was punctuated by TJ Edwards' 20-yard air strike to Cole Blackman, who grabbed the pass while leaping over the padded wall. Following a missed field goal try by the Oilers, the Fighters added to their early advantage on Martez Carter's five-yard surge with 4:37 to go in the opening frame.
Frisco's defense followed by standing tall deep in its own territory, stuffing the hosts inside the three-yard line on four straight plays to take over on downs. Edwards waltzed in on a five-yard keeper 2:41 later.
Thanks in part to Tre Harvey's return on the ensuing kickoff, Tulsa finally got on the scoreboard about a minute later when Daniel Smith connected with Joshua Crockett from 17 yards out.
Edwards then skied a 40-yard score to Devon McCoy and dumped a three-yard touchdown to Blackman, bookending a field goal by the Oilers' Michael Hall. Lionel McConnell's interception with inside of a minute to go in the initial half allowed Edwards to hit Blackman for their third scoring link five ticks before halftime.
Tulsa cut into the sizable deficit with a three-yard rushing score by Jarrod Ware 1:47 into the third quarter and added a point on a rouge thereafter. Smith added a 10-yard touchdown pass to Alexis Rosario to shorten the gap to 15.
Edwards finished with three ground scores and Carter two. Smith's late connection with Ware provided the final count. The Fighters' Ethan Caselberry had a fumble recovery in the win.
