Lake County Fielders News Release
ZION, IL-The Lake County Fielders (25-34) came from behind to beat the first-place Kansas City T-Bones (39-22) 10-8 in front of 4,410 happy Fielders' fans at Fielders' Stadium in Zion.
The T-Bones plated three runs in the first inning on a two-run double from Dwayne White and a Jim Fasano RBI single. The Fielders fired back right away when Jeff Dunbar socked a two-out, two-run home run to score Josh Short and Brian McFall.
The Fielders added another run in their half of the second with Kyle Higgins and Zach Larson leading off the inning with consecutive singles. Higgins was brought around on a sac fly off the bat of Guillermo Martinez to put the Fielders ahead by one. White quickly re-tied the game, hitting a solo home run over the right field wall to lead off the top of the third for the T-Bones.
The T-Bones exploded for four runs with two outs in the fifth. After Fielders' starting pitcher Garry Bakker struck out the side in the fourth and the first two batters of the fifth, for a Fielders' record five consecutive strikeouts, White doubled and Sadler singled, scoring White on a close play at the plate.
After Fasano walked, Lake County manager Fran Riordan pulled Bakker and brought in Garrett Sherrill. Brian Joynt and Ryan Fox hit back to back doubles to make it 8-4 before Eladio Rodriguez struck out swinging to end the rally.
The Fielders responded with one in the bottom of the fifth as Brian McFall crushed a solo home run, through the driving rain.
Lake County continued to claw back in the bottom of the seventh. Short reached on a two-out walk. Then McFall crushed his second home run of the game over the left field wall to bring the Fielders within one at 8-7.
The T-Bones stranded two runners on base in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings, allowing the Fielders to complete the comeback with three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning.
With one out, Higgins reached on a ground ball through the legs of short stop Jimmy Mojica. Larson followed up with a double, and Martinez was hit by a pitch from T-Bones reliever Drew Graham (2-2). Juan Valdes coaxed a walk, which forced in Higgins with the tying run. Amos Ramon then followed that with a two-run single to right, giving the Fielders the 10-8 lead.
Marco Gonzalez pitched a scoreless eighth inning to earn his second win. Chris Homer worked around a leadoff single in the ninth to earn his ninth save of the season.
The Fielders look to take the series in game four against Kansas City Thursday night at 7:00pm. Lake County left-hander Matt Schweitzer (1-2, 7.58) will square off against T-Bones' ace Andrew Cruse (8-3, 2.29).
