Privett, Nelson Soar 'Hammers Past Flyers 7-2

SCHAUMBURG, IL - Jon Nelson continued his torrid streak and Todd Privett allowed one run in seven stellar frames to lead the Joliet JackHammers (33-28) past the Schaumburg Flyers (23-39) 7-2 Wednesday night at Alexian Field. The JackHammers took two of three from the Flyers and will return to Silver Cross Field tomorrow night for the first of four with Gary.

Joliet came out of the gate with three in the first off Ryan Gehring (3-6), highlighted by a two run double off the bat of Chris Colton. Josh Flores and Jonathan Wyatt led off with singles with Flores scoring on the play after Wyatt was caught in a rundown between first and second. Jon Nelson singled with two outs and Freddie Thon reached on an Tommy Fitzgerald error to extend the inning to Colton.

Privett (6-4) did the rest, striking out a JackHammer season high nine hitters in seven innings. The southpaw allowed one run on three hits without walking a single Flyer.

Nelson collected four more hits, including a solo home run in the third to put the JackHammers up 5-1. Nelson extended his hitting streak to 20 games, the longest streak in the Northern League this season.

The Flyers got their lone tally off Privett in the second on back-to-back doubles by Ron Bourquin and newcomer Kit Pellow. The former big leaguer was signed before the game and went 3-3 with a run batted in.

Joliet added their final runs in the fifth and seventh frames, scoring on a Thon single in the fifth and a bases loaded Colton walk in the seventh.

Gehring, the former JackHammer, lasted 4.2 innings allowing six runs (four earned) on ten hits without striking out a batter.

Nelson added three runs scored to go along with his game high four hits. Colton went 1-3 with three runs knocked in.

The JackHammers begin a four game series with Gary tomorrow night in Joliet. Rory Shortell (2-4) and Nolan Nicholson (3-2) is the starting pitching matchup. First pitch is slated for 7:10 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. pre-game show on 1340 WJOL.
