Fielders Power Past Scorpions, Winning 6-1

July 9, 2011 - North American League (NAmL)
Lake County Fielders News Release

The Lake County Fielders powered their way through the Yuma Scorpions Friday night, getting their 24th win of the season defeating Yuma 6-1.

The Fielders were led by starting pitcher Dan Blewett (5-1), who went the distance pitching nine innings, giving up one run on six hits with five strikeouts in the game. Blewett, who now leads the Fielders in wins and is tied for second in the league lead, pitched his first complete game of the season.

"I felt as strong in the 8th and 9th inning as I did in the first and second," Blewett said.

Blewett wasn't the only one who powered their way through the Scorpions tonight, as C.J. Ziegler, Alan Rick and Patrick Brooks each homered throughout the game. Ziegler's bomb came in the first inning, driving in Brandon Newton (who led off the game with a walk) and Argelis Nunez (who reached on a base hit), to make it a 3-1 lead. The home run by Ziegler was his 14th of the season, and increased his RBI total to 39. Ziegler, who also had a double in the victory, was 2 for 4 in the game.

But the home run of the night came off the bat of newly acquired catcher Alan Rick, who sent a fastball from Yuma starting pitcher Andrew Romo high into the right field bleachers for a two-run shot to make it a 5-1 lead.

"When I hit it, I knew it was out," Rick said.

Rick, who added another hit in tonight's victory, was playing in only his second game with the Fielders.

"It's nice to contribute so quickly so fans don't think I'm just some random guy on the ballclub."

Rick's monster home run was soon followed by a solo shot from Patrick Brooks, who lined one over the right field fence to make it a 6-1 lead for the Fielders.

Other top performers from the game were Nunez (2 for 4), Jino Gonzalez (1 for 3) and Newton, who stole his team leading 10th stolen base. With the win, the Fielders (24-13) remain in first place ahead of the Edmonton Capitals.

Lake County is set to take on Yuma once again tomorrow night at 6:30p.m in the sixth game of the series.
