"Dirty Al" Returns to WhiteWings as Bench Coach
July 9, 2011 - North American League (NAmL)
Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release
HARLINGEN - "Dirty Al" Gallagher, who managed the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings during the 2008 season and the Coastal Bend Thunder the last two years, is back with the WhiteWings as the bench coach.
"He's got a lot to bring. He's a guy who played, coached, managed on the highest level. I'm happy to have him back. He's a local man. He deserves to be here. He's been in the game 46 years," WhiteWings Manager Eddie Dennis said.
"Retirement was the pits. [My wife] Nancy has been struggling with her health, so this will be something to help me get my mind off of it and have some fun. It's always good to be around the kids. They keep you young," Gallagher said.
Additionally, first baseman Eric Gonzalez has been placed on the inactive list due to an oblique injury while shortstop Edgar Trejo has been activated after missing 16 games with a knee injury.
The first ever first round draft pick of the San Francisco Giants and the first ever San Francisco-native to play for the Giants, Gallagher made his Major League debut in 1970, playing four them four just over four seasons before finishing his career with the California Angels. In 442 games, Gallagher hit .263 with 11 home runs and 130 RBI.
Gallagher began his managerial career in 1976 with the Durango Scorpions (Mexican League). He managed the WhiteWings to a 16-30 record in 2008 and led the Thunder to the playoffs in 2009, edging the WhiteWings by half of one game for the final playoff spot.
Gonzalez is batting .352 with one home run and eight RBI. Trejo is batting .319 with four home runs and 15 RBI.
