Lake County Fielders News Release

ZION, IL-The Lake County Fielders (26-26) dropped both games of a double-header to the Winnipeg Goldeyes (33-32) by scores of 5-1 and 6-3 in front of 3,907 Fielders' fans at Fielders' Stadium.

Starting pitchers Ryan Bicondoa (1-5) and Stephen Flake (3-3) traded zeros through the first five innings in game one before Winnipeg put up a five spot in the top of the sixth.

Luis Alen led off with a single, and Vince Harrison followed with a bloop single in front of right fielder Cody Strait, who threw a laser to third to nab Alen.

After Dee Brown popped out, Aharon Eggleston walked and then the floodgates opened for the Goldeyes offense. Price Kendall and Wes Long delivered back-to-back RBI singles. Then, Juan Diaz crushed the big blow of the game, a three-run home run over the left field wall.

The Fielders countered with one run in the bottom of the sixth on a Jeff Dunbar sacrifice fly which scored Joshua Short, but that would be all for the Fielders as Flake finished off Lake County in the seventh to take game one.

Unlike in game one, the Goldeyes got on the board early, putting up five runs in the first inning of game two.

Eggleston led off with a double to centerfield. With one out, Long, Diaz and Kevin West hit consecutive singles to plate two. Justin Justice came up and knocked one out over the right field wall for a three run home run.

The Fielders began to work their way back into the game in the third inning. Short lined a base hit back up the middle with two outs to score Juan Valdes and Amos Ramon.

Lake County added another in the bottom of the fifth on a Ramon double to the left center field gap, plating Valdes. But, the Fielders left the tying runs on base to end the inning.

Winnipeg added an insurance run in the top of the seventh on a Luis Alen RBI single to close out the scoring.

After the rough first inning, Garret Sherrill (6-2) settled down in his first start of the season, not allowing another run. He pitched 3.1 innings, giving up five runs on six hits, striking out five and walking none.

The Fielders look to get back into the win column tomorrow at 6:00 against Winnipeg at Fielders' Stadium in Zion, a game which will be followed by a Sports Physical Therapy and Rehab Specialists fireworks show.
