NL Winnipeg Goldeyes

Goldeyes defeat Fielders in Game 2

July 30, 2010 - Northern League (NL)
Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

In the second game of the twin bill, the Winnipeg Goldeyes didn't leave anything to chance.

The Goldeyes (33-32) scored five times in the first inning, as the Fish beat the Lake County Fielders (26-36) 6-3 in Game 2 of the Friday night doubleheader in Zion, Ill.

Justin Justice hit a three-run home run to highlight the five runs Winnipeg put on the scoreboard in the first inning. Kevin West and Juan Diaz also knocked in runs in the inning.

Justice scored on a Luis Alen single in the seventh inning for Winnipeg's sixth run.

Lake County countered with two runs in the third inning and one more in the fifth, but its comeback bid would fall short for the second-straight game.

Wes Long extended his hitting streak to 13 games with hits in both games Friday night. That ties Vince Harrison for the longest hitting streak by a member of the Goldeyes this season.

Antony Bello went four innings to get the win. He allowed all three Fielders runs, but also struck out three batters. Chad Benefield threw two scoreless innings and Ian Thomas got the save by tossing a scoreless seventh inning.

Winnipeg has now won three games in a row, five of their last six games and have climbed back above .500 for the first time since July 10.

The two wins, combined with the Kansas City T-Bones losing 7-6 to the Rockford RiverHawks, means the Goldeyes are seven games out of first place.

The Goldeyes and Fielders will meet for the third game of this four-game series Saturday night at 6 p.m.
