Lake County Fielders News Release

Yuma, Arizona -June 5, 2011- It was another solid effort from the Lake County Fielders (8-2) on Sunday night, handling the Yuma Scorpions (3-8) in an 11-3 victory. For the Fielders, it was their fourth consecutive win, and it gave them the series victory with two games left to play.

As they have done in the first two games against Yuma, the Fielders scored in the top of the 1st inning. Brandon Newton led off the game with a single to left field, then proceeded to steal both second base and third base, en route to coming home on Quentin Luquette's two-run single.

The Fielders added two more runs on the board in the top of the 2nd inning. Joe Dempsey was brought home on a passed ball and Matt Mansilla, who came off hitting a cycle on Saturday night, hit an RBI single to make it a 4-0 Fielders lead.

Fielders starting pitcher Michael Moore (1-0) allowed an unearned run to score for Yuma in the bottom of the 2nd inning, when a pickoff throw went awry, allowing the runner at first base to advance to third base. It was his only major mistake of the night, as he was practically seamless in his second start of the season. Moore went six innings allowing the unearned run on six hits, as he defended the big Fielders advantage.

Before Moore exited the game, the Fielders tacked on five runs in the top of the 5th inning. Dempsey's RBI single, Newton's two-run triple, Rex Rundgren's RBI single and Argelis Nunez's RBI double highlighted the five-run, five-hit fifth inning.

Newton would add another RBI to his total on a fielders choice in the top of the 8th inning, giving him a total of three for the game. And Brad Payne brought home the Fielders' 11th run of the game in the top of the 9th inning on his one-out single.

The Fielders bullpen returned to their dominant ways, allowing only two more unearned runs in the last three innings of the game. Ryan Carr, Nick Gaudi and Steve Grife combined to allow four hits to limit Yuma from having a chance to comeback in the game, like they did on Saturday night.

Game four of the five-game series takes place on Monday night from Desert Sun Stadium in Yuma, AZ, when Fielders' ace starter, right-hander Vince Bongiovanni takes the hill for the Fielders. The first pitch for the last two games in the series is scheduled for 7:35pm local time (9:35pm central). You can listen to the game on 1220 AM WKRS or online at fieldersbaseball.com or wkrs.com.
