Lake County Fielders News Release

ZION, IL-The Lake County Fielders (30-39) opened a four game series with the Gary SouthShore RailCats (34-36) with a 6-2 victory in Zion, riding the arm of starting pitcher Zach Ward.

Ward (6-5) continued his hot pitching, getting past an early home run to win his fifth consecutive decision in his last eight starts, all wins for the Fielders.

Ward gave up a two-run home run to Christian Guerrero in the first inning, but shut down the RailCats for the rest of the game, allowing only five hits over the next eight innings.

The Lake County offense quickly bounced back from the early deficit, scoring on an RBI double by Brian McFall in the first and an RBI single by Anthony Esquer in the second inning to tie the game at two.

The Fielders took the lead in the fifth inning when Esquer led off with a single to left field. Juan Valdes lined his first triple of the season off the right field wall to score Esquer. Amos Ramon then lined a single over a drawn in infield and the Fielders had a 4-2 lead.

Lake County added two more insurance runs in the eighth inning on Cody Strait's RBI double and Anthony Esquer's RBI single. Esquer was 4-for-4 with two RBI in the game.

Ward pitched his second consecutive complete game and third of the season. He allowed the two runs on seven hits, walked two and struck out seven.

The Fielders look to continue their winning ways Friday night at 7:00pm in Zion. The game will be followed by the Sports Physical Therapy and Rehab Specialists' fireworks extravaganza.
