Thon Powers \'Hammers Comeback 9-7 Victory

August 5, 2010 - Northern League (NL)
Joliet JackHammers News Release

Freddie Thon blasted a two run homer in the ninth and drove in three more runs to lead the Joliet JackHammers (36-31) over the Kansas City T-Bones (40-27) 9-7 Wednesday night at CommunityAmerica Ballpark. The JackHammers will look for the three game sweep tomorrow night in Kansas City.

Joliet came into the ninth trailing 7-6, but managed three runs against Francis Beltran (0-1). Brad Correll started the rally with a one out single and was lifted for a pinch runner in Josh Flores. The speedy outfielder stole second on the first pitch and Jon Nelson would walk to put two runners on. Thon stepped into the batter's box and immediately saw Flores and Nelson attempt the double steal. Eladio Rodriguez threw down to second and the ball skipped into the outfield to plate Flores to tie the game at seven. Thon sent the next pitch over the wall in right field to put the JackHammers up for good at 9-7.

The T-Bones picked up two unearned runs in the eighth to take a 7-6 lead. William Jackel (5-1) walked Jim Fasano and Brian Joynt singled to start the frame. After Ryan Fox lined out to left, Eladio Rodriguez plated the tying run on a grounder misplayed by Kevin Rios at short. Keith Hernandez, pinch hitting for Jake Bradshaw, hit into a fielder's choice to give Kansas City their first lead at 7-6.

The JackHammers quickly jumped on Andrew Cruse with four runs in the first, highlighted by a bases loaded double by Ryan Wehrle. Thon plated the first run with a single, setting the stage for Wehrle.

Kansas City received three home runs from Fox in the setback, including a three run shot in the second off Rory Shortell. Fox added solo homers in the fourth and sixth, tying the game at five with his last long ball.

Shortell went the first five to take a no-decision, allowing four runs on eight hits with two strikeouts and two walks. Jackel got the win, surrendering two unearned runs in 1.1 innings.

Cruse tossed six frames, giving up five runs (four earned) on ten hits with only one strikeout. Beltran took the loss in his first outing with the T-Bones, allowing three ninth inning runs.

Thon and Wehrle each drove in three runs on three hits with Nelson and Chris Colton each picking up two base hits.

The JackHammers will send Devin Anderson (3-3) to the mound tomorrow night opposite Reid Santos (4-3). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. with a 6:55 p.m. pre-game show on 1340 WJOL.
