Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
KANSAS CITY, KS - Patrick Fiala picked up his third homer of the season as the Canaries beat the Kansas City T-Bones 7-3 on Saturday night.
Starter Ray Hanson had his best outing of the year, tossing seven full innings of work, giving up one run on only four hits and struck out seven.
The Canaries jumped out to an early lead in the first. Ethan Chapman led off the game with a sharp single and then advanced to second on a Jake Taylor single, putting runners at first and second. J.C. Linares reached on a fielder's choice as Chapman moved to third. Blake Schmit drove in Chapman with a single, putting the Birds up early 1-0.
That lead was short-lived as Kansas City battled back in the bottom of the first. Dalton Wheat singled to lead off the inning and then stole second. Jake Blackwood drove in Wheat with a single to tie the game at one.
The Birds' offense exploded in the third. Back-to-back singles from Chapman and Darwin Perez started the inning. Both advanced on a wild pitch. Chapman scored on a Linares groundout, and Perez came home on a wild pitch to make it a 3-1 game. After Schmit and Monger walked, Patrick Fiala blasted a Mike Kickham offering over the wall to push the Birds' lead to 6-1.
Both offenses went quiet in the middle innings, as the Birds tacked on just one run in the seventh to push their lead to 7-1 and Ryan Retz smashed a solo homer to lead off the eighth to cut the Sioux Falls lead to 7-2.
The T-Bones attempted a comeback in the ninth. Anthony Gallas roped a one-out triple, then scampered home on an error to cut the lead to 7-3. But Jose Ortega locked in a earned the final two outs to finish the game.
Kris Regas takes the mound for the Canaries on Sunday night in game three of the final four games of the season. Fans can listen to all of the action, all weekend long on Sioux Falls Sports Radio KWSN.
