Fever Look To Continue Momentum On The Road
May 13, 2010 - Indoor Football League (IFL)
Tri-Cities Fever News Release
Everyone on the Tri-Cities Fever roster and coaching staff knew the wins would come. It was just a matter of when.
Now that they are coming, the Fever hopes to continue to ride that momentum to get its first Indoor Football League playoff berth.
The Fever has won two straight and climbed into third place in the Pacific North Division after beating Kent last Saturday at Toyota Center. The Fever (3-5) is currently seventh in the conference race with the top eight teams making the playoffs.
"We felt like the wins were going to come at some point," said Fever coach Adam Shackleford. "Sometimes, it just takes time."
The Fever is in search of its third straight win Saturday night against the winless Colorado Ice (0-9) at the Budweiser Events Center in Fort Collins, Colo.
Shackleford says don't let the Ice's record fool you.
Also take into account Tri-Cities has not won a road football game since 2008.
"They are a scary football team," he said. "They've played some good football against some tough football teams."
The Ice is coming off a 32-30 loss to Wichita last Saturday.
The Fever is coming off an impressive 71-24 win over Kent in which the defense took over the game. Tri-Cities forced five turnovers and had five sacks and nine tackles-for-loss.
The defense also scored four touchdowns and recorded a safety. Kent finished with minus-42 yards rushing.
"We are starting to come together," Shackleford said. "I think the guys get a long pretty well. You have to remember that we are a completely new football team who hadn't played together before this year."
BEHIND CENTER: Quarterback Houston
Lillard will make his third straight start for the Fever, after helping the team to a 71-24 win over Kent last Saturday. In two starts,
Lillard is 32-of-47 passing for 342 yards and 10 touchdowns.
INJURY UPDATE: Leading tackler
Montavis Pitts is probable for Saturday's game. Pitts missed last week's game with an injured hamstring.
STAT SHEET: Defensive back
Lionell Singleton had two interceptions in Saturday's win over Kent. He returned both interceptions for touchdowns, totaling 82 yards. That ranks him tied for third in the league in interception return yards. He ranks second in the league in interceptions return for touchdowns.
Not a bad game.
FIRST IMPRESSION: Antoine Rutherford had a solid debut at running back last week, rushing for 48 yards on eight carries. Rutherford has taken over for Tyson Thompson, who recently was offered a contract by the United Football League.
"He knew when he first got here, he was going to play a waiting game," Shackleford said. "He got his chance and did a nice job for us."
