Greenville Drive News Release
The Capital City Bombers take great pride for their part in the 4th of July traditions of the Midlands. After all, nothing could give you a more All-American experience than a baseball game with a hot dog in your hand and flags waving around you, all building to a jaw-dropping fireworks show to celebrate Independence Day. Once again this season, the Bombers will offer two opportunities for fans to enjoy the spectacle, with fireworks after the July 3rd game against the Augusta GreenJackets and after the July 4th game against the Asheville Tourists. Each game begins at 7:05pm, with gates opening at 6pm. Come for baseball, stay for the breathtaking "Concert in the Sky." For Thursday, the Old Navy Home Run Jackpot will be more than $500 and on Friday, Old Navy has free flags for everyone. Ticket sales have been brisk, but plenty of seats are still available as of this writingâplease call 254-HITS, visit www.bomberball.com, or stop by the ballpark box office to get your seats for the most popular games of the year!
2. "BARK" BY POPULAR DEMAND...
Bow-wow-WOW! The Bombers have added another "Bring Your Dog Night" for this Saturday, July 5th. Normally the team just does this once a year, but with so many fans begging for more, we're tossing them a bone. Saturday's game will allow canine companions in for free to enjoy a fun night of Bombers Baseball and special guests "SkyyDogs USA." It will be the first Columbia performance for the SkyyDogs in three years. Fans (both the two-legged and four-legged variety) will enjoy the running, jumping, Frisbee-catching action of SkyyDogs USA and their trainer, "Rockin' Ray" Masel. That's rightâSaturday the fifth at 7:05pm it's Bring Your Dog Night, featuring SkyyDogs USA!
3. MEANWHILE, ON THE FIELD...
Okay, let's take a promotion break for a moment and talk baseball! With June behind us, the Bombers have inched into first place in the SAL Southern Division second half standings. The Bombers will need to finish in first or in second behind only Hickory if they expect to make the playoffs this season. Capital City is 45-31 overall, 6-2 in the second half. Blake Whealy won his second straight Old Navy Home Run Hero award, leading the team in home runs for June (just as he did in May, while Aaron Baldiris got the nod in April). Whealy and Andres Rodriguez are the only two Bombers to be honored with BC Powder SAL Batter of the Week awards this season (no pitchers have been selected yet for that honor). The two Bombers in the South Atlantic League All-Star game fared well: pitcher Kevin Deaton got the start for the Southern Division and tossed one shutout inning, and third baseman Aaron Baldiris batted 1-2 once he got in the game. Recent roster additions include pitcher Maikel DeLeon and outfielders Jamar Hill and Noel Devarez (also used as a catcher). June ended with four straight winsânow we will see how July gets started!
4. YOUR ATTENTION, CAMPERS...
Spaces are still available for the 8th Annual Bombers Baseball Camp! Your boys and girls, ages 7-14, will love getting instruction in the fundamentals of the game from our professional players and coaches. For only $125, each camper receives those valuable lessons, plus a Bombers cap, camp T-shirt, certificate of completion, and lunch each day. The Bombers Baseball camp runs July 8th-11th at Capital City Stadium, 9am-1pm each day (including lunch). It's a great way to improve baseball skills and get to know the players on a personal level. Join us for camp by calling the team at 254-HITS, signing up online at www.bomberball.com (under the schedule menu), filling out the application from the game program, or asking any of our staff members.
5. PLAYER PROFILE: TIM McNAB
Before the game you'll see him smiling and happily signing autographs, but come game time he's seriously ready to hit the mound out of the bullpen, often as the closer for the Bombers. He's Tim McNab from Hollywood, FL, a 23-year-old right-hander. Tim spends his off-season as a substitute teacher when he's not taking college courses. He considers Don Mattingly his baseball hero or role model and says "Major League" is his favorite baseball movie. Tim likes country music, fishing, and playing golf. So far this year, Tim has compiled a 2.15 ERA in more than 37 relief innings over 22 appearances, with opponents only batting .170 against him.
6. SPONSOR SPOTLIGHT: MARBLE SLAB CREAMERY
Mmmmmmmmmmm...Marble Slab. No, really, have you tried it yet? Visit the Marble Slab Creamery on Bower Parkway, next to Columbiana Place Cinemas in the Harbison area (phone 803-749-4233). You'll find a different ice cream experience, where you come up with the combination you want and then watch your personal "mixins" folded into the ice cream on the marble slab and piled onto a fresh waffle cone.
They also offer sundaes, splits, shakes, pies, and cakesâlike the kind you get in the Marble Slab Birthday Blast (the perfect way to celebrate a birthday at the ballpark, call 254-HITS for more information). Use the coupon from the game program and tell them the Bombers sent you!
7. THIS WEEK'S QUOTE OF NOTE
"Baseball, to me, is still the national pastime because it is a summer game. I feel that almost all Americans are summer people, that summer is what they think of when they think of their childhood. I think it stirs up an incredible emotion within people." --Steve Busby
