FerryHawks Hang on for First 'Battle of the Belt' Win

CENTRAL ISLIP, NY- The Staten Island FerryHawks earned their first road win of the season Saturday night on Long Island, defeating the Ducks 3-1 at Fairfield Properties Ballpark. Victor Capellan struck out Jake Zarello with the potential tying and go-ahead runs on-base in the bottom of the ninth inning, giving the FerryHawks their first win against the Ducks in five tries this season.

Leading 3-0 entering the home half of the ninth, Staten Island needed three outs from Chris Nunn to earn potentially their first shutout, road win, and victory against the Ducks. After issuing the FerryHawks first 1-2-3 inning in the eighth, Nunn started the ninth by walking Dustin Woodcock and then striking out Vladimir Frias. After inducing a pop out off the bat of Alejandro De Aza, Nunn walked Sam Travis and Rusney Castillo to load the bases. Edgardo Alfonso took the ball from Nunn and handed it to Capellan, needing one out for the victory. Capellan's second pitch to Austin Rei sailed to the backstop and pushed Woodcock home to make it 3-1. With the tying run on second, Capellan walked Rei to reload the bases. Zarrello struck out looking on three pitches, giving Staten Island the franchise's tenth win.

Five FerryHawks relievers combined to allow just the one ninth-inning tally across seven innings after starter Jordan Simpson was removed due to injury. Simpson was replaced by Joe Kuzia before the start of the bottom of the third during his warmups.

Kuzia (1-2) proceeded to throw a season-best three innings, giving up just one hit with four strikeouts.

Staten Island took a lead they'd never give up after Kuzia's scoreless bottom-of-the third inning. Battling Ducks starter Stephen Tarpley, the FerryHawks scored the first run with a mini two-out rally. Brandon Wagner kept the inning alive with a single through the right side, before a John Nester double to right-center scored Wagner from first for a 1-0 lead.

The FerryHawks supported the relief effort with two more runs in the fifth inning off of Tarpley. Three straight batters reached with one out - Javier Betancourt walked, Alfredo Reyes singled, and Joseph Monge singled. The Monge knock plated both Betancourt and Monge for a 3-0 advantage.

Tarpley (0-3) coughed up the three runs on six hits. He whiffed five FerryHawks and walked one in the loss.

Eric Mariñez and Williams Ramirez combined to toss the sixth and seventh innings scoreless, before giving way to Nunn.

Staten Island (9-28) and Long Island finish their three-game series on Sunday afternoon at Fairfield Properties Ballpark.
