Portland Beavers News Release

PORTLAND, Ore. - On the heels of a most impressive stretch of games to round out June, Portland Beavers outfielder Alex Fernandez today was named the Pacific Coast League's "Batter of the Week" for the seven-day period ending June 29.

In six games played, Fernandez batted .500 (14-for-28) with three doubles, two home runs, six RBIs and eight runs scored for the Beavers. He had at least two hits in all but one of the six games to raise his current batting average to .317 for the season and carried a whopping ..821 slugging percentage and a .500 on-base percentage during the inclusive span that began June 23.

Fernandez has helped lead a record month at the plate for the Beavers, who are on pace to hit .300 or better in a month for the first time in the team's three seasons. The outfielder is batting .367 (33-for-90) with 12 extra-base hits and 16 RBIs in June.

With a 1-for-4 day at the plate Sunday afternoon at Salt Lake, Fernandez extended his current hitting streak to eight games.

Fernandez, 22, began the season at Class AA Mobile, where he batted .307 (23-for-75) with five doubles, a home run and 10 RBIs before being transferred to Portland in late April.

Fernandez is the second Portland batter to be so honored by the league this season. Outfielder Jason Bay won the award by hitting .550 with three home runs and nine RBIs from April 21-26.

New Orleans pitcher Doug Sessions grabbed the league's "Pitcher of the Week" honors. He was 2-0 in two starts and did not allow an earned run in 14.0 innings pitched, yielding just seven hits in those games.
